เมืองเชียงใหม่ มีชื่อปรากฏในตำนานว่า "นพบุรีศรีนครพิงค์เชียงใหม่" สร้างขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 1839 โดยพญามังรายเป็นผู้ทรงสร้าง มีอายุครบ 700 ปี ในปี พ.ศ. 2539

ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้มีการปฏิรูปการปกครองหัวเมืองประเทศราช โดยมีการจัดตั้งการปกครองแบบมณฑลเทศาภิบาล เรียกว่า "มณฑลพายัพ" ต่อมาเชียงใหม่ได้มีการปรับปรุงการปกครองและยกฐานะขึ้นเป็น "จังหวัด" ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2476 ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว จนถึงปัจจุบัน
