3. Results and discussion<br>3.1. Fractional precipitation utilizing ultrasonic cavitation bubbles Fractional precipitation is a pre-purification process that produces high-yield and high-purity paclitaxel, an anticarcinogen, in a simple and efficient manner on the basis of difference in its solubility [1,6]. However, the conventional process is limited in its applicability to the economical mass production of paclitaxel due to its long precipitation time (approximately 3 days) and low operating temperature (− 4 ◦C). In order to address these problems, ultrasound (ultrasonic power: 80 W,180 W, 250 W) was applied to the fractional precipitation at various temperatures (5 ◦C, 15 ◦C, 25 ◦C). First, the yield of paclitaxel according to the precipitation time in control (conventional fractional precipitation) is shown in Fig. 2. When the sample purity was 20.4 % and 63.6 %, the precipitation time was 600–700 min and 500–700 min and the paclitaxel yield 60.0 % and 70.4 %, respectively. In addition, the paclitaxel purity of precipitates was 29.7 % and 84.9 %, respectively (data not shown). On the other hand, when ultrasonic waves were utilized (Fig. 3), the precipitation time was about 12–30 min at a temperature of 5− 25 ◦C and the paclitaxel yield was 80.6–84.6 % (5 ◦C), 75.4–84.3 % (15 ◦C), and 67.3–76.0 % (25 ◦C) for a sample purity of 20.4 % at all ultrasonic powers (80–250 W). For a sample purity of 63.6<br>%, the precipitation time was about 5–30 min at a temperature of 5− 25 ◦C and the paclitaxel yield was 92.3–95.8 % (5 ◦C), 82.1–95.1 % (15 ◦C), and 76.5–88.8 % (25 ◦C). In addition, the paclitaxel purity was 33.6–33.8 % (5 ◦C), 33.2–33.7 % (15 ◦C), and 29.7–33.6 % (25 ◦C) for a<br>sample purity of 20.4 %, and 81.7–82.1 % (5 ◦C), 80.8–81.6 % (15 ◦C), and 80.2–81.3 % (25 ◦C) for a sample purity of 63.6 % (data not shown). As the precipitation temperature decreased and as the ultrasonic power increased, the yield of paclitaxel increased. The purity was not significantly different in relation to temperature and ultrasonic power.
