อุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะสิมิลัน อยู่ตำบลเกาะพระทอง ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ 80,000 ไร่ ประกาศเป็นเขตอุทยานฯ เมื่อ1 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2525 คำว่า “สิมิลัน” เป็นภาษายาวี หรือ มลายู แปลว่า เก้า หรือ หมู่เกาะเก้า  หมู่เกาะสิมิลันเป็นหมู่เกาะเล็ก ๆ ในทะเลอันดามัน มีทั้งหมด ๙ เกาะ เรียงลำดับจากเหนือมาใต้ ได้แก่  เกาะหูยง เกาะปายัง เกาะปาหยัน เกาะเมี่ยง (มี ๒ เกาะติดกัน) เกาะปายู เกาะหัวกระโหลก (เกาะบอน) เกาะสิมิลัน และเกาะบางู  ที่ทำการอุทยานฯ อยู่ที่เกาะเมี่ยงเพราะเป็นเกาะที่มีน้ำจืด  ช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายนถึงเดือนเมษายน เป็นช่วงที่น่าท่องเที่ยวมากที่สุด ส่วนเดือนพฤษภาคมถึงพฤศจิกายน เป็นฤดูมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ มีคลื่นลมแรงเป็นอันตรายต่อการเดินเรือและทางอุทยานฯ จะประกาศปิดเกาะในเดือนพฤษภาคมเพื่อเป็นการฟื้นฟูธรรมชาติทุกปี
