เมืองต้นแบบสิ่งแวดล้อมอาเซียน : กรมส่งเสริมคุณภาพสิ่งแวดล้อมได้ยกระดับเทศบาล 5 แห่ง ที่ได้รับรางวัล เทศบาลน่าอยู่อย่างยั่งยืน ยอดเยี่ยม ระดับประเทศ ให้เป็นเมืองต้นแบบสิ่งแวดล้อมยั่งยืนอาเซียน ในโครงการเมืองต้นแบบด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมเมืองที่ยั่งยืนในภูมิภาคอาเซียน (ASEAN ESC MODEL CITIES) นอกจากจะเป็นการยกระดับให้เทศบาลทั้ง 5 แห่ง กลายเป็นต้นแบบในระดับประเทศและภูมิภาคแล้ว ยังเป็นการสร้างแนวร่วมในการขยายแนวคิดการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืนไปยังท้องถิ่นอื่นๆ ได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพด้วย

นอกจากนี้ยังดำเนินงานในด้านอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย อาทิ การส่งเสริมการมีส่วนร่วมด้านการผลิต การบริการ และการบริโภคที่เป็นมิตรกับสิ่งแวดล้อม เสริมสร้างความร่วมมือภาคี เครือข่าย เพื่อการอนุรักษ์และฟื้นฟูทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม พัฒนาเครือข่ายองค์กรเอกชนด้านทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม (NGOs) พัฒนาบุคลากรและถ่ายทอดเทคโนโลยีด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม พัฒนาระบบสารสนเทศสิ่งแวดล้อมเพื่อสนับสนุนงานอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม และยังให้ความสำคัญกับงานวิจัยและพัฒนาด้านทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ซึ่งผลจากงานวิจัยสามารถนำไปพัฒนาต่อยอด เพื่อใช้ในการจัดการและแก้ไขปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม รวมถึงการทำงานในระดับภูมิภาค เช่น การเสริมศักยภาพเครือข่ายสิ่งแวดล้อมศึกษาอาเซียน เป็นต้น

จึงคงไม่มากเกินไปที่จะกล่าวว่า ด้วยบทบาทหน้าที่ของกรมส่งเสริมคุณภาพสิ่งแวดล้อมในการส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนให้ประชาชนมีจิตสำนึกและมีส่วนร่วมในการบริหารจัดการทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและแวดล้อม ได้มีส่วนผลักดันให้เกิดผลสัมฤทธิ์ในการแก้ไขปัญหาและสร้างมาตรการป้องที่มีประสิทธิภาพ ที่ช่วยคลีคลายสถานการณ์ดังกล่าวอย่างได้ผลและเป็นรูปธรรม จนเกิดเป็นต้นแบบของการบูรณาการการทำงานร่วมกันเพื่อให้เกิดการจัดการทรัพยากรและสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างมีส่วนร่วม ระหว่างหน่วยงานภาครัฐ ภาคเอกชน องค์กรพัฒนาเอกชน และชุมชนในพื้นที่ ตลอดไปจนถึง การขยายแนวปฏิบัติที่เป็นเลิศผ่านการสร้างต้นแบบและศูนย์เรียนรู้ด้วย
