คณะการบัญชีและการจัดการ เป็นหน่วยงานหนึ่งของมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ซึ่งจัดตั้งขึ้นภายใต้ ระเบียบมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ว่าด้วยคณะการบัญชีและการจัดการ ตั้งแต่วันที่ 19 กรกฎาคม 2541 มีลักษณะของการดำเนินงานและรูปแบบของการบริหารงานแบบนอกระบบราชการเน้นความคล่องตัว มีประสิทธิภาพ และพึ่งตนเองมากที่สุดในการจัดการศึกษา โดยมีสภามหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามทำหน้าที่กำกับดูแลและควบคุม

คณะการบัญชีและการจัดการเริ่มต้นจากภาควิชาบริหารธุรกิจ คณะมนุษย์ศาสตร์และสังคมศาสตร์ ใน ปีการศึกษา 2538 ได้เปิดสอนหลักสูตรบริหารธุรกิจ (ต่อเนื่อง 2 ปี) สาขาวิชาการบัญชี และสาขาวิชาการตลาดขึ้น เพื่อรองรับการเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจ (จากเดิมที่เปิดสอนเฉพาะวิชาโทบริหารธุรกิจ) โดยจัดสอนในวันเสาร์-อาทิตย์ โดยเป็นโครงการพิเศษ ในปีการศึกษา 2540 ได้เปิดหลักสูตรบริหารธุรกิจบัณฑิต (ต่อเนื่อง 2 ปี) สาขาวิชาการจัดการ และสาขาวิชาคอมพิวเตอร์ธุรกิจ และหลักสูตรบริหารธุรกิจมหาบัณฑิตขึ้น พร้อมทั้งปรับปรุงหลักสูตรบริหารธุรกิจบัณฑิต (ต่อเนื่อง 2 ปี) สาขาวิชาการบัญชีและสาขาวิชาการตลาดด้วย
