วรรณกรรมเรื่อง “สี่แผ่นดิน” ในบริบททางการเมืองไทย[1]

“สี่แผ่นดิน” เป็นวรรณกรรมชิ้นเอกชิ้นหนึ่งของพลตรี ม.ร.ว. คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมช เป็นเรื่องราวของ “พลอย” สตรีคนหนึ่งที่เกิดในตระกูลขุนนาง และมีชีวิตอยู่ตั้งแต่กลางรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวจนกระทั่งสิ้นรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวอานันทมหิดล (พ.ศ. 2425 – 2489) อันเป็นช่วงเวลาที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงหลายประการในสังคมไทย ม.ร.ว. คึกฤทธิ์ ได้เขียนเรื่องดังกล่าวและทยอยลงตีพิมพ์ในหนังสือพิมพ์ สยามรัฐรายวัน เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2494 และในปีถัดมาก็ได้ตีพิมพ์รวมเป็นเล่ม โดยที่ผู้แต่งได้กล่าวไว้ในคำนำว่าต้องการให้ “สี่แผ่นดิน” เป็นเสมือน “ภาพรายละเอียดเบื้องหลังประวัติศาสตร์” เพื่อให้ผู้อ่านสามารถเข้าใจเหตุการณ์ต่างๆที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตได้อย่างแจ่มแจ้ง (คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมช 2534)
