โรงเรียนสุราษฎร์พิทยา ก่อตั้งเมื่อว

โรงเรียนสุราษฎร์พิทยา ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 5 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2482 เดิมชื่อโรงเรียนสตรีสุราษฎร์ธานี มีนางสาวบุญคง สาระเกษตริน เป็นครูใหญ่ ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2510 กรมสามัญศึกษาได้อนุญาตให้โรงเรียนสุราษฎร์ธานีย้ายไปอยู่อาคารสร้างใหม่ ณ ที่สนามบินเก่า ถนนดอนนก ตำบลมะขามเตี้ย อำเภอเมืองสุราษฎร์ธานี และได้ยกสถานที่เดิมของโรงเรียนสุราษฎร์ธานีซึ่งอยู่ติดกัน ให้แก่โรงเรียนสตรีสุราษฎร์ธานี

ปี พ.ศ. 2520 โรงเรียนได้รับงบประมาณสร้างอาคารเรียน จำนวน 1 หลัง โรงฝึกงาน 1 หลัง อาคารต่างๆ สร้างเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2521 จึงรับนักเรียนได้เพิ่มมากขึ้น

ปี พ.ศ. 2521 (5 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2521) โรงเรียนสตรีสุราษฎร์ธานี ได้รับอนุมัติให้เปลี่ยนชื่อโรงเรียนจากเดิม "โรงเรียนสตรีสุราษฎร์ธานี" เป็นโรงเรียน "สุราษฎร์พิทยา" ก็เนื่องจากทางโรงเรียนได้เล็งเห็นถึงความจำเป็นต่อเด็กที่ยังขาดที่เรียนทั้งชาย-หญิง ควรจะมีโอกาสเข้ามาศึกษาเล่าเรียนเพื่อเป็นกำลังของชาติต่อไป จึงได้รับนักเรียนชายเข้ามาเรียนในระดับมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 และปัจจุบันนี้ก็ได้รับนักเรียนชายในระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้นและตอนปลายจำนวนประมาณ 953 คน ในเมื่อมีการรับนักเรียนชายเข้ามาจึงจำเป็นต้องมีการเปลี่ยนชื่อโรงเรียนเสียใหม่ตามที่ได้รับอนุมัติ

ปี พ.ศ. 2522 โรงเรียนได้งบประมาณสร้างอาคารแบบ 420 อีก 1 หลัง จำนวน 20 ห้องเรียน ปรากฏว่าไม่มีผู้ใดยื่นซองประกวดราคาจ้างก่อสร้าง กรมสามัญศึกษา จึงต้องอนุมัติให้สร้างโดยว่าจ้างพิเศษ ซึ้งบริษัทรับเหมาก่อสร้างได้ขอตัด สี ไฟฟ้า และครุภันฑ์ โต๊ะ เก้าอี้หมด ผลสุดท้ายก็ยังได้อาคารเพิ่มอีก 1 หลังเป็นอาคารเรียน

ปี พ.ศ. 2524 โรงเรียนได้รับงบประมาณให้สร้างอาคารเรียนแบบ 424 อีก 1 หลังจำนวน 18 ห้องเรียน เต็มตามรูปแบบ ซึ้งแล้วเสร็จในเดือนสิงหาคม 2525 นับเป็นอาคารหลังแรกที่โรงเรียนได้มาอย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ (แทนอาคารเก่าที่ชำรุด)

ปี พ.ศ. 2530 โรงเรียนได้รับงบบประมาณในการสร้างอาคารอเนกประสงค์ 3 ชั้น ชั้นล่างสุดเป็นใต้ถุนโล่ง ชั้นที่ 2 เป็นโรงฝึกงาน และชั้นที่ 3 เป็นหอประชุม

ปี พ.ศ. 2531 โรงเรียนได้ปรับปรุงใต้ถุนอาคารอเนกประสงค์เป็นห้องสมุดโรงเรียน

ปี พ.ศ. 2539 โรงเรียนได้รับงบประมาณในการก่อสร้างอาคารอเนกประสงค์ 6 ชั้น จำนวน 1 หลัง งบประมาณรวม 46,500,000 บาท และแล้วเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2541

ปัจจุบันโรงเรียนสุราษฎร์พิทยามี คณะครู-อาจารย์รวม 135 คน นักเรียน 3,092 คน และนักการ-ลูกจ้างประจำ 14 คน
