งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาผลกระทบทางด้านจราจรและพลังงานจากการใช้รถไฟฟ้ามวลชนที่ใช้งานอยู่ในกรุงเทพ, ประเทศไทย ซึ่งมีให้บริการอยู่ 2 ระบบ คือ BTS และ MRT การวิเคราะห์เส้นทางที่ให้บริการและการประเมินสภาพการจราจรบนถนนที่เกิดขึ้น การวิเคราะห์การประหยัดพลังงานน้ำมันที่จากการใช้รถไฟฟ้า และการสรุปผลการศึกษา ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การใช้ระบบขนส่งมวลชนทั้ง 2 ระบบ ส่งผลต่อปริมาณรถยนต์ที่เดินทางบนถนนที่ระบบทั้ง 2 วิ่งให้บริการ สภาพการจราจรบริเวณถนนดังกล่าวมีสภาพที่ดีขึ้น และสามารถลดปริมาณการใช้น้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงจากรถยนต์ส่วนบุคคลที่เกิดจากความเร็วเฉลี่ยของรถยนต์ที่วิ่งบนถนนได้เร็วขึ้น และรถยนต์ที่นำมาจอดในลานจอดรถยนต์ของระบบรถไฟฟ้าเพื่อมาใช้การเดินทางโดยรถไฟฟ้าแทน การส่งเสริมการใช้ระบบขนส่งมวลชนในการเดินทางแทนรถยนต์โดยเฉพาะในเมืองหลวงจะเป็นการแก้ปัญหาจราจรที่ติดขัดและพลังงานน้ำมันที่มีแนวโน้มจะมีปริมาณที่ลดน้อยลงและต้นทุนที่สูงขึ้นได้อย่างยั่งยืน
