แผ่นดินไหวที่อำเภอพาน พ.ศ. 2557 เกิ
แผ่นดินไหวที่อำเภอพาน พ.ศ. 2557 เกิดขึ้นเมื่อเวลา 18.08.43 น. ตามเวลาท้องถิ่นของประเทศไทย (UTC+7) ในวันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม 2557 สำนักเฝ้าระวังแผ่นดินไหว กรมอุตุนิยมวิทยา รายงานว่า จุดเหนือศูนย์เกิดแผ่นดินไหวอยู่ในตำบลทรายขาว อำเภอพาน จังหวัดเชียงราย ต่อมา กรมทรัพยากรธรณี ระบุว่า การใช้เครื่องมือตรวจวัดได้ข้อสรุปใหม่ว่าศูนย์กลางการเกิดแผ่นดินไหวอยู่ที่ตำบลดงมะดะ อำเภอแม่ลาว จังหวัดเชียงราย เนื่องจากพบแนวรอยแยกปรากฏอยู่จำนวนมาก ส่วน USGS รายงานว่าจุดเหนือศูนย์เกิดแผ่นดินไหวอยู่ห่างจากอำเภอแม่ลาวไปทางใต้ 9 กิโลเมตร และอยู่ห่างจากตัวเมืองจังหวัดเชียงรายไปทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ 27 กิโลเมตร มีผู้เสียชีวิต 2 คน

แผ่นดินไหวครั้งนี้เกิดขึ้นจากการปลดปล่อยพลังงานของรอยเลื่อนพะเยา จุดศูนย์กลางแผ่นดินไหวอยู่ลึกลงไปใต้ดิน 6 กิโลเมตร ซึ่งถือว่าตื้น ทำให้มีความรุนแรงและความเสียหายเป็นอย่างมาก โดยแรงสั่นสะเทือนทำให้เกิดความเสียหายแก่สิ่งปลูกสร้างในระยะ 30 กิโลเมตรจากจุดศูนย์กลาง และมีแผ่นดินไหวตามมากอีกมากกว่า 100 ครั้ง ทั้งนี้ยังมีการให้เฝ้าระวังแผ่นดินไหวตามที่อาจเกิดขึ้นจากรอยเลื่อนพะเยาในจังหวัดเชียงราย จังหวัดพะเยาและจังหวัดลำปาง
แผ่นดินไหว
แผ่นดินไหวครั้งนี้ถูกบันทึกว่าเป็นแผ่นดินไหวที่มีความรุนแรง เกิดแรงสั่นสะเทือนทั้งภาคเหนือของประเทศไทยและพม่าในช่วงเย็น ประชาชนหลายจังหวัดภาคเหนือ (รวมถึงเชียงราย เชียงใหม่และลำปาง) สามารถรับรู้แรงสั่นสะเทือนได้ หน้าต่าง ผนัง ถนนและวัดได้รับความเดือดร้อนจากแรงสั่นสะเทือน ในช่วงแรกยังไม่มีการค้นพบผู้บาดเจ็บหรือเสียชีวิต จนต่อมามีรายงานข่าวพบผู้เสียชีวิตสองราย และผู้บาดเจ็บอีกหลายคน

เส้นทางคมนาคม
ในอำเภอพาน มีถนนถูกฉีกตามรอยแตกที่รุนแรง กรมทางหลวง เปิดเผยข้อมูลหลังเกิดหลังแผ่นดินไหวว่า ความเสียหายที่เกิดขึ้นบนทางหลวง ในพื้นที่จังหวัดเชียงราย มี 2 แห่ง ในทางหลวงสาย 118 ที่ตัดผ่านอำเภอแม่ลาว ช่วง กม. 147-152 มีการบิดตัวเสียรูปทรงเกือบทั้งหมด ผิวการจราจรแตกหักเสียหาย ทำให้ผิวจราจรต่างระดับกันเล็กน้อย
