ประชาคมอาเซียน เป็นเป้าหมายของการรวมตัวกันของประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียน เพื่อเพิ่มอำนาจต่อรองและขีดความสามารถการแข่งขันของอาเซียนในเวทีระหว่างประเทศในทุกด้าน รวมถึงความสามารถในการรับมือกับปัญหาใหม่ๆ ในระดับโลกที่ส่งผลกระทบมาถึงภูมิภาคอาเซียน เช่น ภาวะโลกร้อน การก่อการร้าย หรือกล่าวอีกนัยหนึ่งคือ การเป็นประชาคมอาเซียน คือการทำให้ประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียนเป็น “ครอบครัวเดียวกัน” ที่มีความแข็งแกร่งและมีภูมิต้านทานที่ดี โดยสมาชิกในครอบครัวมีสภาพความอยู่ที่ดี ปลอดภัย และสามารถทำมาค้าขายได้อย่างสะดวกมากยิ่งขึ้น

นับตั้งแต่วันก่อตั้ง อาเซียนได้พยายามแสดงบทบาทในการธำรงรักษาและส่งเสริมสันติภาพ เสถียรภาพ ความมั่นคงและความเจริญร่วมกันในภูมิภาค ตลอดจนมีวิวัฒนาการ อย่างต่อเนื่องในการสร้างความไว้เนื้อเชื่อใจระหว่างประเทศสมาชิก ตลอดจนพัฒนาการในเรื่องความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคม จนเป็นที่ประจักษ์แก่นานาประเทศ และนำไปสู่การขยายสมาชิกภาพ โดยบรูไนดารุสซาลาม เข้าเป็นสมาชิกลำดับที่ 6 เมื่อปี 2527 เวียดนาม เข้าเป็นสมาชิกลำดับที่ 7 ในปี 2538 ลาวและพม่า เข้าเป็นสมาชิกพร้อมกันเมื่อปี 2540 และกัมพูชาเข้าเป็นสมาชิกล่าสุดเมื่อปี 2542 ทำให้ในปัจจุบันอาเซียนมีสมาชิกรวมทั้งหมด 10ประเทศ
