ชุมชนคีรีวงได้ตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ในบริเวณนี้มากว่า ๒๐๐ ปีแล้ว ในอดีต ชุมชนนี้เรียกว่า “บ้านขุนน้ำ” เนื่องเพราะว่าชุมชนตั้งบ้านเรือนอยู่บริเวณต้นน้ำของเขาหลวง อันเป็นส่วนหนึ่งเทือกเขานครศรีธรรมราช ต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “บ้านคีรีวง” ตามชื่อวัดที่สร้างขึ้นมา ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า “บ้านที่อยู่ภายในวงล้อม(วง) ของภูเขา (คีรี)” จากการสนทนากับกลุ่มผู้อาวุโสในชุมชนคีรีวง เพื่อค้นหาประวัติความเป็นมาของการตั้งถิ่นฐาน พบว่ามีเรื่องเล่าเกี่ยวกับบรรพบุรุษผู้ก่อตั้งชุมชนอยู่หลายแบบด้วยกัน คือ
