บทคัดยอ
ประวัติประเพณีผ้าพันตา
ในสมัยโบราณช่วงฤดูหนาวจะมีอากาศที่หนาวเย็น ชาวบ้านจึงมีความเชื่อว่าจะหาผ้าไปห่มให้แก่พระพุทธรูป แต่จะนำผ้าผืนธรรมดาไปห่มให้นั้นก็อาจดูไม่สวยงาม จึงอยากให้ดูอลังการและสวยงาม จึงนำผ้ามาตีตารางให้ได้ครบ ๑,๐๐๐ ช่อง โดยขนาดของตารางนั้นจะมีขนาดที่เท่า ๆ กัน จึงกลายเป็นผ้าพันตานั้นเอง
ประเพณีผ้าพันตานี้เปรียบเสมือนว่าต้องการรักษาให้พระพุทธศาสนาอยู่ไปนาน ๆ โดยเชื่อว่าการนำผ้าพันตาไปห่มให้แก่พระพุทธรูปนั้น เป็นการแสดงออกว่าเราช่วยกันปกห่มเอาไว้ ปกป้องเอาไว้ ให้พระพุทธศาสนาคงอยู่กับเราไปนานๆ
ประเพณีผ้าพันตาเกี่ยวข้องกับคติความเชื่ออย่างไร
ประเพณีผ้าพันตาที่บ้านโซ้นั้นจะเกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อ สามารถแบ่งออกเป็น ๓ ข้อ คือ
๑. ประเพณีผ้าพันตาจะจัดขึ้นในช่วงเดือนยี่เป็ง เพราะว่าช่วงเดือนยี่เป็งทางภาคเหนือจะฟังธรรม ฟังเทศน์มหาชาติโดยจะมีการเทศน์จำนวน ๑,๐๐๐ พระคาถาหรือเรียกอีกอย่างว่าคาถาพัน โดยมีความเชื่อที่เกี่ยวข้องว่าเวลาทำอะไรจะต้องทำให้ครบพัน พันในที่นี้ก็เปรียบเสมือนพระคาถาของพระพุทธเจ้าจำนวน ๑,๐๐๐ พระคาถานั้นเอง

๒. สัญลักษณ์ของการห่มผ้าพันตา จะเกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อว่าเมื่อการที่เราจะปกป้องพระพุทธศาสนาให้ดำรงอยู่ไปนาน ๆ นั้น เราจะต้องมีบุญและบารมีก่อน ในการสร้างบุญบารมีนั้นเราก็จะต้องบำเพ็ญทานเหมือนดั่งกับพระเวสสันดรที่บำเพ็ญทาน จนเกิดเป็นพระบารมีที่ยิ่งใหญ่ ดังนั้นเราจะต้องสร้างบารมีในการปกห่มร่างกายให้อบอุ่นก่อนคือการมีศีล ๕ จากนั้นจึงสร้างทานบารมีโดยการเอาผ้าพันตาไปห่มพระพุทธรูป เพื่อแสดงออกถึงการปกป้องพระพุทธศาสนาให้คงอยู่สืบไป
