กาลครั้งหนึ่ง นานมาแล้ว มีพระราชาองค์หนึ่ง ซึ่งชอบปลอมตัวออกไปสำรวจความเป็นอยู่ของประชาชนกับมหาดเล็กคนสนิทอยู่เสมอ วันหนึ่งขณะที่เดินไปในหมู่บ้าน พระราชาได้กลิ่นหอมประหลาดซึ่งไม่เคยได้กลิ่นแบบนี้มาก่อน จึงให้มหาดเล็กไปสืบดู จึงรู้ว่ากลิ่นหอมดังกล่าวมาจากกระท่อมของหญิงชราที่กำลังตำข้าวเปลือกอยู่ มหาดเล็กกลับมาทูลว่า กลิ่นหอมประหลาดนี้คือ กลิ่นของแกลบ  ได้ยินดังนั้นพระราชาทรงอยากจะเสวย มหาดเล็กทูลว่า แกลบเป็นอาหารของวัว ไม่เหมาะสมที่จะมาเป็นอาหารของพระราชา แต่พระราชาก็ไม่ฟัง มีรับสั่งให้มหาดเล็กนำแกลบมาปรุงเป็นอาหาร และกำชับห้ามไม่ให้มหาดเล็กบอกแก่ผู้ใด
