สาเหตุของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมมีอยู่มากมาย แต่ที่สําคัญมี 2 ประการ คือ
1. การเพิ่มของประชากร (Population Growth) โดยเฉลี่ยประชากรทั่วโลกมีแนวโน้มสูงมาก ขึ้น ถึงแม้ว่าการรณรงค์เรื่องการวางแผนครอบครัวจะได้ผลดี แต่ปริมาณการเพิ่มของประชากรก็ยัง เป็นการเติบโตแบบเอกซ์โพเนนเชียล (Exponential Growth) ซึ่งเป็นการเพิ่มในอัตราทวีคูณ เมื่อผู้คน มากขึ้นความต้องการบริโภคทรัพยากรก็เพิ่มมากขึ้นทุกด้าน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องอาหาร ที่อยู่อาศัย พลังงาน ฯลฯ
