          การเล่นแบดมินตันได้เข้ามาสู่ประเทศไทยในราวปี พ.ศ. 2456 โดยเริ่มเล่นกีฬาแบดมินตันแบบมี ตาข่าย โดยพระยานิพัทยกุลพงษ์ ได้สร้างสนามขึ้นที่บ้าน ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ริมคลองสมเด็จเจ้าพระยาธนบุรี แล้วนิยมเล่นกันอย่างแพร่หลายออกไป ส่วนมากเล่นกันตามบ้านผู้ดีมีตระกูล วังเจ้านาย และในราชสำนัก การเล่นแบดมินตันครั้งนั้น นิยมเล่นข้างละ 3 คน ต่อมาประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2462 สโมสรกลาโหมได้เป็นผู้จัดแข่งขันแบดมินตันทั่วไปขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก โดยจัดการแข่งขัน 3 ประเภทได้แก่ ประเภทเดี่ยว ประเภทคู่ และประเภทสามคน ปรากฏว่าทีมแบดมินตันบางขวางนนทบุรี (โรงเรียนราชวิทยาลัยบางขวางนนทบุรี) ชนะเลิศทุกประเภท นอกจากนี้ มีนักกีฬาแบดมินตันฝีมือดีเดินทางไปแข่งขันยังประเทศใกล้เคียงอยู่บ่อยๆ

          ในปี พ.ศ. 2494 พระยาจินดารักษ์ได้ก่อตั้งสมาคมชื่อว่า "สมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทย" เมื่อแรกตั้งมีอยู่ 7 สโมสร คือ สโมสรสมานมิตร สโมสรบางกอก สโมสรนิวบอย สโมสรยูนิตี้ สโมสร ส.ธรรมภักดี สโมสรสิงห์อุดม และสโมสรศิริบำเพ็ญบุญ ซึ่งในปัจจุบันนี้เหลือเป็นสโมสรสมาชิกของสมาคมอยู่เพียง 2 สโมสร คือ สโมสรนิวบอย และสโมสรยูนิตี้เท่านั้น และในปีเดียวกัน สมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทยก็ได้สมัครเข้าเป็นสมาชิกของสหพันธ์แบดมินตันนานาชาติด้วย สมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทยมีนักกีฬาแบดมินตันที่มีฝีมือดีอยู่มาก ซึ่งได้สร้างชื่อเสียงให้กับประเทศไทยจากการลงแข่งขันใน รายการต่าง ๆ ของโลกเป็นอย่างมาก ทั้งโธมัสคัพ อูเบอร์คัพ และการแข่งขันออลอิงแลนด์ โดยวงการแบดมินตันของไทยยกย่อง นายประวัติ ปัตตพงศ์ (หลวงธรรมนูญวุฒิกร) เป็นบิดาแห่งวงการแบดมินตันของประเทศไทย
