ประวัติ

ตนกู อับดุล ราห์มัน เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 8 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2446 ที่วังอิสตานาเปอลามิน (Istana Pelamin) เมืองอลอร์สตาร์ รัฐเกดะห์ ประเทศมาเลเซีย ซึ่งในขณะนั้นยังอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของสหราชอาณาจักร เป็นบุตรของเจ้าพระยาไทรบุรี (อับดุลฮามิด) (เจ้าพระยาฤทธิสงคราม)[1] สุลต่านองค์ที่ 24 แห่งรัฐเกดะห์ กับหม่อมมารดาชาวไทยนามว่า หม่อมเนื่อง นนทนาคร[2] หรือมะเจ๊ะเนื่อง หรืออีกชื่อว่า ปะดูกา ซรี เจ๊ะเมินยาราลา (Paduka Seri Cik Menjalara) ชายาองค์ที่ 6 ของท่านสุลต่าน ซึ่งเป็นบุตรีของหลวงบุรานุรักษ์ เจ้าเมืองนนทบุรีในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยตนกู อับดุล ราห์มันเป็นลูกชายคนที่ 14 จากบรรดาลูก 20 คนของสุลต่านอับดุลฮามิด

ประวัติการศึกษา
เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2452 (ค.ศ. 1909) ตนกู อับดุล ราห์มัน ได้เข้าศึกษาในชั้นประถมมาเลย์ (Malay Primary School) ที่ถนนบาฮารู (Jalan Baharu) ในเมืองอลอร์สตาร์ ประเทศมาเลเซีย ต่อด้วยเข้าเรียนต่อที่โรงเรียนในปกครองของอังกฤษ ซึ่งปัจจุบันเป็นวิทยาลัยสุลต่านอับดุลฮามิด
ท่านตนกู อับดุล ราห์มาน ท่านเป็นนักเรียนเก่าเทพศิรินทร์ ในปี พ.ศ. 2456 ขณะที่มีอายุ เพียง 10 ขวบ ถูกส่งตัวมาเรียนหนังสือที่กรุงเทพมหานคร ร่วมกับพี่ชายของเขาอีก 3 คน ท่านเข้ารับการศึกษาที่โรงเรียนเทพศิรินทร์ ในกรุงเทพมหานคร ประเทศไทย โดยมีเพื่อนร่วมรุ่นและเพื่อนสนิท คือ ถวิล คุปตารักษ์ หรือหลวงถวิลเศรษฐพาณิช เรียนอยู่ที่โรงเรียนเทพศิรินทร์ 2 ปี จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2456-2458 ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. 2458 เข้าเรียนต่อที่โรงเรียนปีนังฟรีสกูล(Penang Free School)
ปี พ.ศ. 2461 ท่านเป็นนักเรียนคนแรกที่ได้ทุนจากรัฐบาลของรัฐเกดะห์ ที่ไปศึกษาในสหราชอาณาจักร ไปศึกษาต่อที่วิทยาลัยเซนต์แคทรีน (St Catharine's College) ในมหาวิทยาลัยแคมบริดจ์ และได้รับปริญญาบัณฑิตสาขาศิลปศาสตร์ ในปี ค.ศ. 1925
