ในปัจจุบันนี้มีประชากรไทยนับถือพุทธศาสนามากกว่าร้อยละ 94 และมีพุทธศาสนิกชนมากเป็นอันดับ 4 ของโลก (รองจากประเทศจีน ญี่ปุ่น และเวียดนาม ตามลำดับ)
