งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อวันจันทร์แรกของเดือน ต.ค. พ.ศ.2498 ตามคำเชิญชวนของ นายวี.เอ็ม. กุลกานี ผู้แทนองค์การสหพันธ์เพื่อ สวัสดิภาพเด็กระหว่างประเทศแห่งสหประชาชาติ เพื่อให้ประชาชนเห็นความสำคัญและความต้องการของเด็ก และเพื่อกระตุ้นให้เด็กตระหนักถึงบทบาทอันสำคัญของตนในประเทศ โดยปลูกฝังให้เด็กมีส่วนร่วมในสังคม เตรียมพร้อมให้ตนเองเป็นกำลังของชาติ

รัฐบาลจัดให้มีคณะกรรมการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติขึ้นมาคณะหนึ่ง ทำหน้าที่ประสานงานกับหน่วยงานต่างๆ ทั้งภาครัฐบาล รัฐวิสาหกิจ และเอกชน กำหนดให้มีการฉลองวันเด็กแห่งชาติทั้งในส่วนกลางและส่วนภูมิภาค

จุดประสงค์เพื่อให้เด็กทั่วประเทศทั้งในระบบโรงเรียนและนอกระบบโรงเรียน ได้รู้ถึงความสำคัญของตน เกี่ยวกับสิทธิ หน้าที่ ความรับผิดชอบ ระเบียบวินัย ที่มีต่อตนเองและสังคม มีความยึดมั่นในสถาบันชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ และการปกครองในระบอบประชาธิปไตย อันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข

งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจัดขึ้นทุกปีในวันจันทร์แรกของเดือน ตุลาคม ถึงปี พ.ศ.2506 และในปี พ.ศ.2507 ไม่สามารถจัดงานวันเด็กได้ทัน จึงได้เริ่มจัดอีกครั้งในปี 2508 โดยเปลี่ยนเป็นวันเสาร์ที่สอง ของเดือนม.ค. เนื่องจากเห็นว่าเป็นช่วงหมดฤดูฝนและเป็นวันหยุดราชการ จนถึงทุกวันนี้

คำขวัญวันเด็กเป็นคำขวัญที่นายกรัฐมนตรีมอบให้เด็กไทย เนื่องในโอกาสวันเด็กแห่งชาติของทุกปี โดย คำขวัญวันเด็กมีขึ้นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2499 ในสมัยที่จอมพล ป.พิบูลสงคราม ดำรงตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรี ว่า "จงบำเพ็ญตนให้เป็นประโยชน์ต่อผู้อื่นและส่วนรวม"
