ประวัติ[แก้]

งานประเพณีถวายพระเพลิงฯจำลอง ในวันอัฏฐมีบูชา วัดพระบรมธาตุทุ่งยั้ง
เมื่อองค์สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ได้เสด็จปรินิพพานไปแล้ว 7 วัน มัลละกษัตริย์แห่งเมืองกุสินารา พร้อมด้วยประชาชน และพระสงฆ์อันมีพระมหากัสสปเถระเป็นประธาน ได้พร้อมกันกระทำการถวายพระเพลิงพุทธสรีระ ณ มกุฏพันธนเจดีย์ แห่งเมืองกุสินารา เป็นวันหนึ่งที่ชาวพุทธต้องมีความโศกเศร้าเสียใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง เพราะการสูญเสียแห่งพระพุทธสรีระ เมื่อวันแรม 8 ค่ำ เดือน 6 ซึ่งนิยมเรียกกันว่าวันอัฏฐมีนั้น เมื่อเวียนมาบรรจบแต่ละปี พุทธศาสนิกชนบางส่วนได้ประกอบพิธีบูชาขึ้น มีการเวียนเทียนเป็นต้น แต่ไม่ทั่วไปทั่วราชอาณาจักร โดยจะประกอบพิธีในบางวัดเท่านั้น ตามแต่ความศรัทธาของท้องถิ่น ในจังหวัดอุตรดิตถ์ เช่น ประเพณีถวายพระเพลิงฯ จำลอง ที่วัดพระบรมธาตุทุ่งยั้ง เป็นต้น

ประวัติพิธีถวายพระเพลิงพระบรมศพในพุทธประวัติ[แก้]
พิธีถวายพระเพลิงพระบรมศพมีขึ้นในวันที่ 8 หลังจากพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าเสด็จปรินิพพานใต้ต้นสาละในราตรี 15 ค่ำ เดือน 6 โดยพวกเจ้ามัลลกษัตริย์จัดบูชาด้วยของหอม ดอกไม้ และเครื่องดนตรีทุกชนิด ที่มีอยู่ใน เมืองกุสินาราตลอด 7 วัน แล้วให้เจ้ามัลละระดับหัวหน้า 8 คน สรงเกล้า นุ่งห่มผ้าใหม่ อัญเชิญพระสรีระไปทางทิศตะวันออก ของพระนคร เพื่อถวาย พระเพลิง

หลังจากที่พระเพลิงเผาซึ่งเผาไหม้พระพุทธสรีระดับมอดลงแล้ว บรรดากษัตริย์มัลละทั้งหลายจึงได้อัญเชิญพระบรมสารีริกธาตุทั้งหมด ใส่ลงในหีบทองแล้วนำไปรักษาไว้ภายในนครกุสินารา ส่วนเครื่องบริขารต่างๆ ของพระพุทธเจ้าได้มีการอัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานตามที่ต่างๆ อาทิ ผ้าไตรจีวร อัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานที่แคว้นคันธาระ บาตรอัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานที่เมืองปาตลีบุตร เป็นต้น และเมื่อบรรดากษัตริย์จากแคว้นต่างๆ ได้ทราบว่าพระพุทธเจ้าได้เสด็จดับขันธปรินิพพานที่นครกุสินารา จึงได้ส่งตัวแทนไปขอแบ่งพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ เพื่อนำกลับมาสักการะยังแคว้นของตนแต่ก็ถูกกษัตริย์มัลละปฏิเสธ จึงทำให้ทั้งสองฝ่ายขัดแย้งและเตรียมทำสงครามกัน แต่ในสุดเหตุการณ์ก็มิได้บานปลาย เนื่องจากโทณพราหมณ์ได้เข้ามาเป็นตัวกลางเจรจาไกล่เกลี่ย เพื่อยุติความขัดแย้งโดยเสนอให้แบ่งพระบรมสารีริกธาตุออกเป็น 8 ส่วนเท่าๆ กัน ซึ่งกษัตริย์แต่ละเมืองทรงสร้างเจดีย์ที่บรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ตามเมืองต่างๆ ดังนี้
