กรมการท่องเที่ยว มีภารกิจเกี่ยวกับการท่องเที่ยวในการพัฒนามาตรฐานการบริการด้านท่องเที่ยวและแหล่งท่องเที่ยว รวมทั้งการสนับสนุนการประกอบธุรกิจนำเที่ยวและมัคคุเทศก์ให้อยู่ในระดับมาตรฐาน เพื่อก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และวัฒนธรรม และเพื่อให้เกิดการท่องเที่ยวแบบยั่งยืน โดยให้มีอำนาจหน้าที่ดังต่อไปนี้

1.ศึกษา วิเคราะห์ วิจัย รวบรวมข้อมูลสถิติด้านการท่องเที่ยว และแนวทางการดำเนินการพัฒนาการท่องเที่ยวให้สอดคล้องกับนโยบายและแผนพัฒนาการท่องเที่ยวแห่งชาติ

2.จัดทำแผนพัฒนาบริการการท่องเที่ยว รวมทั้งประสาน ส่งเสริม และสนับสนุนให้มีการปฏิบัติตามแผนที่กำหนด

3.จัดทำแผนพัฒนาทะเบียนธุรกิจทำเที่ยวและมัคคุเทศก์ รวมทั้งประสาน ส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนให้มีการปฏิบัติตามที่กฎหมายกำหนด

4.จัดทำแผนพัฒนาแหล่งท่องเที่ยว รวมทั้งประสาน ส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนให้มีการปฏิบัติตามแผนที่กำหนด 5.ดำเนินการตามกฎหมายว่าด้วยธุรกิจนำเที่ยวและมัคคุเทศก์ และกฎหมายอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง

6.ติดตามและประเมินผลงานด้านพัฒนาการท่องเที่ยว

7.ส่งเสริมสนับสนุนกิจการภาพยนตร์ ทั้งภาคการผลิต การบริการ และกิจการที่เกี่ยวข้อง

8.ปฏิบัติการอื่นใดตามที่กฎหมายกำหนดให้เป็นอำนาจหน้าที่ของสำนักงาน หรือตามที่กระทรวงหรือคณะรัฐมนตรีมอบหมาย
