ประเทศลาวตั้งอยู่ในเขตร้อนชื้น ลักษณะทางภูมิศาสตร์มีความแตกต่างกันค่อนข้างมาก ตั้งแต่ภาคกลางจนถึงภาคเหนือในแขวงพงสาลีที่มีเขตแดนอยู่ติดกับประเทศจีน ภูมิประเทศส่วนใหญ่มีลักษณะเป็นเทือกเขาสูงสลับซับซ้อนและที่ราบสูงอากาศค่อนข้างหนาวถึงหนาวจัด ส่วนทางทิศตะวันออกมีลักษณะเป็นเทือกเขาและที่ราบติดกับประเทศเวียดนาม สำหรับทางตอนใต้สุดมีลักษณะเป็นเทือกเขาติดกับประเทศกัมพูชา ประกับกับที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากลมมรสุมในทะเลจีนใต้ ทำให้ประเทศลาวมีลักษณะทางภูมิอากาศแบ่งออกได้ 3 ฤดู คือ ฤดูร้อน เริ่มต้นตั้งแต่เดือนกุมภาพันธ์ จนถึงเดือนเมษายน ฤดูฝน เริ่มต้นตั้งแต่เดือนพฤษภาคม จนถึงเดือนตุลาคม ฤดูหนาว เริ่มต้นตั้งแต่เดือนพฤศจิกายน จนถึงเดือนมกราคม
