ดร.จารุจินต์ นภีตะภัฏ เกิดเมื่อ 22 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2493 ที่ริมคลองบางซื่อ สุขาภิบาลอนุสาวรีย์ จังหวัดพระนคร จบการศึกษาจากโรงเรียนวชิราวุธวิทยาลัย จบปริญญาโทด้านกีฏวิทยา จากมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์
ดร.จารุจินต์ มีนิสัยชอบศึกษาสิ่งมีชีวิตต่าง ๆ มาตั้งแต่เด็ก ขณะศึกษาอยู่ปริญญาโทได้มาช่วยงานกับนายแพทย์บุญส่ง เลขะกุล เมื่อจบออกมาแล้วได้เข้าทำงานในสถาบันวิจัยวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแห่งประเทศไทย
มีผลงานด้านการอนุกรมวิธานสิ่งมีชีวิตต่าง ๆ ทั้ง พืช แมลง นก ปลา สัตว์เลื้อยคลาน สัตว์ครึ่งบกครึ่งน้ำ พร้อมทั้งงานวิจัยและเขียนหนังสือรวบรวมรายชื่อสิ่งมีชีวิตต่าง ๆ ในประเทศไทย รวมทั้งค้นพบสิ่งมีชีวิตใหม่ ๆ จำนวนหนึ่ง และได้รับเกียรติตั้งตามชื่อของท่าน
ตำแหน่งสุดท้ายเป็นผู้อำนวยการพิพิธภัณฑ์ธรรมชาติวิทยา องค์การพิพิธภัณฑ์วิทยาศาสตร์แห่งชาติ ของกระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี งานสุดท้ายที่ตั้งใจจะทำแต่ไม่สำเร็จเพราะเสียชีวิตเสียก่อน คือการออกหนังสือรวบรวมรายชื่อนกทั้งหมดที่พบในประเทศไทย ชื่อ Birds of Thailand

ดร.จารุจินต์ นภีตะภัฏ เสียชีวิตอย่างกะทันหันเมื่อวันที่ 12 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2551 ด้วยการผ่าตัดถุงใต้ตาที่คลินิกศัลยกรรมแห่งหนึ่งที่ถนนเพชรบุรีตัดใหม่ โดยหมอได้ฉีดยาชาและยานอนหลับให้ แต่แล้วจู่ ๆ ชีพจรของดร.จารุจินต์ก็หยุดเต้นลงทันทีและเสียชีวิตลงบนเตียงผ่าตัด
