ในเขตจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราชปรากฏว่ามีร่องรอยเมืองโบราณ ตลอดจนชุมชนโบราณอยู่หลายแห่งด้วยกัน จากหลักฐานทางด้านโบราณคดี (จากการสำรวจและขุดค้น) ในเมืองโบราณเหล่านี้ สันนิษฐานว่าเมืองหลวงของอาณาจักรคงมีการโยกย้ายหลายครั้งตามลำดับดังนี้
