สงกรานต์ เป็นประเพณีของประเทศไทย ลาว กัมพูชา พม่า ชนกลุ่มน้อยชาวไตแถบเวียดนามและมณฑลยูนนานของจีน ศรีลังกาและทางตะวันออกของประเทศอินเดีย[1] สันนิษฐานว่า สงกรานต์ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากเทศกาลโฮลี (होली) ในอินเดีย แต่เทศกาลโฮลีจะใช้การสาดสีแทน เริ่มในทุกวันแรม 1 ค่ำเดือน 4 คือ ในเดือนมีนาคม[2]

สงกรานต์เป็นคำสันสกฤต หมายถึง "การเคลื่อนย้าย" ซึ่งเป็นการอุปมาถึงการเคลื่อนย้ายของการประทับในจักรราศี คือการเคลื่อนขึ้นปีใหม่ในความเชื่อของไทยและบางประเทศในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้

สงกรานต์สืบทอดมาแต่โบราณคู่กับตรุษ จึงเรียกรวมกันว่า ประเพณีตรุษสงกรานต์ หมายถึง ส่งท้ายปีเก่าต้อนรับปีใหม่ เดิมวันที่จัดเทศกาลกำหนดโดยการคำนวณทางดาราศาสตร์ แต่ปัจจุบันระบุแน่นอนว่า 13 ถึง 15 เมษายน วันขึ้นปีใหม่ไทยเป็นวันเริ่มปีปฏิทินของไทยจนถึง พ.ศ. 2431 จากนั้นวันที่ 1 เมษายน เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่จนถึง พ.ศ. 2483[3]

ตามจารึกที่วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม[7] กล่าวตามพระบาลีฝ่ายรามัญว่า ครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว มีเศรษฐีคนหนึ่ง รวยทรัพย์แต่อาภัพบุตร ตั้งบ้านอยู่ใกล้กับนักเลงสุราที่มีบุตรสองคน วันหนึ่งนักเลงสุราต่อว่าเศรษฐีจนกระทั่งเศรษฐีน้อยใจ จึงได้บวงสรวงพระอาทิตย์ พระจันทร์ ตั้งจิตอธิษฐานอยู่กว่าสามปี ก็ไร้วี่แววที่จะมีบุตร อยู่มาวันหนึ่งพอถึงช่วงที่พระอาทิตย์ยกขึ้นสู่ราศีเมษ เศรษฐีได้พาบริวารไปยังต้นไทรริมน้ำ พอถึงก็ได้เอาข้าวสารลงล้างในน้ำเจ็ดครั้ง แล้วหุงบูชาอธิษฐานขอบุตรกับรุกขเทวดาในต้นไทรนั้น รุกขเทวดาเห็นใจเศรษฐี จึงเหาะไปเฝ้าพระอินทร์ ไม่ช้าพระอินทร์ก็มีเมตตาประทานให้เทพบุตรองค์หนึ่งนาม "ธรรมบาล" ลงไปปฏิสนธิในครรภ์ภรรยาเศรษฐี ไม่ช้าก็คลอดออกมา เศรษฐีตั้งชื่อให้กุมารน้อยนี้ว่า ธรรมบาลกุมาร และได้ปลูกปราสาทไว้ใต้ต้นไทรให้กุมารนี้อยู่อาศัย
ต่อมาเมื่อธรรมบาลกุมารโตขึ้น ก็ได้เรียนรู้ซึ่งภาษานก และเรียนไตรเภทจบเมื่ออายุได้เจ็ดขวบ เขาได้เป็นอาจารย์บอกมงคลต่าง ๆ แก่คนทั้งหลาย อยู่มาวันหนึ่ง ท้าวกบิลพรหม ได้ลงมาถามปัญหากับธรรมบาลกุมาร 3 ข้อ ถ้าธรรมบาลกุมารตอบได้ก็จะตัดเศียรบูชา แต่ถ้าตอบไม่ได้จะตัดศีรษะธรรมบาลกุมารเสีย ท้าวกบิลพรหมถามธรรมบาลกุมารว่า ตอนเช้าศรีอยู่ที่ไหน ตอนเที่ยงศรีอยู่ที่ไหน และตอนค่ำศรีอยู่ที่ไหน ทันใดนั้นธรรมบาลกุมารจึงขอผัดผ่อนกับท้าวกบิลพรหมเป็นเวลา 7 วัน

ครั้นรุ่งขึ้น ท้าวกบิลพรหมก็มาตามสัญญาที่ให้ไว้ทุกประการ ธรรมบาลกุมารจึงนำคำตอบที่ได้ยินจากนกไปตอบกับท้าวกบิลพรหม ท้าวกบิลพรหมจึงตรัสเรียกธิดาทั้งเจ็ดอันเป็นบาทบาจาริกาพระอินทร์มาประชุมพร้อมกัน แล้วบอกว่า เราจะตัดเศียรบูชาธรรมบาลกุมาร ถ้าจะตั้งไว้ยังแผ่นดิน ไฟก็จะไหม้โลก ถ้าจะโยนขึ้นไปบนอากาศ ฝนก็จะแล้ง ถ้าจะทิ้งในมหาสมุทร น้ำก็จะแห้ง จึงให้ธิดาทั้งเจ็ดนำพานมารองรับ แล้วก็ตัดเศียรให้นางทุงษะ ผู้เป็นธิดาองค์โต จากนั้นนางทุงษะก็อัญเชิญพระเศียรท้าวกบิลพรหมเวียนขวารอบเขาพระสุเมรุ 60 นาที แล้วเก็บรักษาไว้ในถ้ำคันธุลี ในเขาไกรลาศ
