นิทรรศการฉายาลักษณ์สยามฯนำเสนอภาพถ่ายโบราณในช่วงเวลาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2403-2453 หรือช่วงปลายรัชกาลที่ 4 จนถึงรัชกาลที่ 5 ถือเป็นชุดภาพยุคแรกที่ถูกบันทึกไว้โดยช่างภาพชาวต่างประเทศที่เดินทางและพำนักในกรุงสยาม มีทั้งภาพบุคคล ภาพเหตุการณ์ สถานที่ วิถีชีวิต ราชพิธี ประเพณี รวมทั้งศิลปวัฒนธรรมที่เกิดขึ้นในยุคสมัยนั้นยุคสมัยที่สยามต้องเผชิญกับความเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างต่อเนื่อง เป็นผลสืบเนื่องจากอิทธิพลหลายประการจากทั้งภายในและภายนอกประเทศ ทำให้เกิดการปรับตัวทั้งทางอารยะและวัฒนธรรมรวมถึงการเข้ามาของอิทธิพลทางตะวันตก การถ่ายภาพและภาพถ่ายคือผลพวงจากวิทยาการในช่วงเวลานั้น เป็นบทบันทึกที่ทำให้เห็นปรากฏการณ์และเหตุการณ์ แสดงให้เห็นถึงทัศนะและความเป็นไปของสยามตามช่วงเวลาในอดีต ภาพที่นำเสนอผ่านนิทรรศการครั้งนี้นั้นจึงเป็นเหมือนเครื่องบันทึกประวัติศาสตร์ที่รอการตีความและเล่าขาน
