วัดอรุณราชวราราม เป็นวัดโบราณสร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกของฝั่งแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา เดิมเรียกว่า "วัดมะกอก" ตามชื่อ ตำบลบางมะกอกซึ่งเป็นตำบลที่ตั้งวัด ภายหลังเปลี่ยนเป็น "วัดมะกอกนอก" เพราะมีวัดสร้างขึ้นใหม่ในตำบลเดียวกัน แต่อยู่ลึกเข้าไปในคลองบางกอก ใหญ่ชื่อ "วัดมะกอกใน" ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. ๒๓๑๐ เมื่อสมเด็จ พระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชม พระราชประสงค์จะย้ายราชธานีมาตั้ง ณ กรุงธนบุรีจึงเสด็จกรีฑาทัพล่องลงมาทาง ชลมารคถึงหน้าวัดมะกอกนอกนี้เมื่อเวลารุ่งอรุณพอดี จึงทรงเปลี่ยนชื่อวัดมะกอกนอกเป็น "วัดแจ้ง" เพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์แห่งนิมิตที่ได้เสด็จมาถึงวัดนี้เมื่อเวลาอรุณรุ่ง
