รายงานผลการวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประสบการณ์การดูแลผู้สูงอายุระยะยาว ภาระและผลกระทบการดูแลผู้สูงอายุระยะยาว และ บทบาทขององค์กรที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดูแลผู้สูงอายุระยะยาวในสังคมไทย ใช้วิธีการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยการสำรวจ การสังเกต การสัมภาษณ์เจาะลึก การสนทนากลุ่ม และศึกษาเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง จากกลุ่มผู้สูงอายุ 179 คน ผู้ดูแล 187 คน และผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องในพื้นที่การวิจัยคือ 13 ตำบล 9 จังหวัด ครอบคลุม 5 ภูมิภาคของประเทศไทย ระยะเวลาตั้งแต่เดือนมิถุนายน 2555 – พฤษภาคม 2556 แล้ววิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา วิเคราะห์ประเด็น และแจกแจงความถี่และร้อยละ ผลการศึกษาพบว่าประสบการณ์เกิดภาวะพึ่งพาระยะยาวของผู้สูงอายุ มี 4 เส้นทาง คือ ภาวะ Stroke ภาวะสมองเสื่อม โรคเรื้อรังร่วม และอายุที่มากกว่า 80 ปี
