ปราสาทศีขรภูมิ สร้างด้วยอิฐ หิน ทราย และศิลาแลง ประกอบด้วยปรางค์ก่ออิฐ ๕ องค์ ตั้งอยู่บนฐานเดียวกัน หันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันออก แผนผังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยม จัตุรัส โดยมีปรางค์ประธานตั้งอยู่ตรงกลาง และมีปรางค์บริวาร ๔ องค์ ล้อมอยู่ทั้ง ๔ ทิศ ศาสนสถานทั้งหมดนี้ล้อมรอบด้วยสระน้ำ ๓ สระ มีรายละเอียดดังนี้
๑.ปรางค์ประธาน แผนผังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสย่อมุมไม้ยี่สิบ องค์ปรางค์ไม่มีมุข มีประตูทางเข้าเพียงด้านเดียวคือ ทางด้านทิศตะวันออก ทับหลังประตูจำหลักภาพ ศิวนาฏราชบนแท่น มีหงส์แบก ๓ ตัว อยู่เหนือเศียรเกียรติมุข มีภาพพระพิฆเณศ พระพรหม พระวิษณุ และนางบรรพตี (พระอุมา) อยู่ด้านล่างเสาประตูสลักเป็นลวดลายเทพธิดา ลายก้ามปู และรูปทวารบาล บริเวณหน้าบันเป็นอิฐประดับลวดลายปูนปั้น
๒. ปรางค์บริวาร แผนผังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสย่อมุมไม้ยี่สิบ องค์ปรางค์ไม่มีมุข มีประตูทางเข้าด้านทิศตะวันออก เช่นเดียวกับปรางค์ประธาน มีทับหลัง ๒ ชิ้น ชิ้นที่หนึ่งเป็นภาพพระกฤษณฆ่าช้างและคชสีห์ (ปัจจุบันเก็บรักษาไว้ที่พิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติพิมาย) ที่ปรางค์บริวารองค์ทิศตะวันตก พบจารึกหินทรายที่ผนังกรอบประตูเป็นจารึกอักษรธรรมอีสาน ภาษาไทย-บาลี เรื่องราวที่จารึกกล่าวถึงกลุ่มพระเถระผู้ใหญ่และท้าวพระยาร่วมกันบูรณะโบราณสถานแห่งนี้
