ความเป็นมาของการตักบาตรดอกไม้นั้น มีแจ้งในพุทธตำนานว่า นายมาลาการผู้ทำหน้าที่ ดอกมะลิสดไปถวายพระเจ้าพิมพิสาร พระราชาแห่งเมืองราชคฤห์เป็นประจำทุกวัน มาวันหนึ่งขณะที่นายมาลาการออกไปเก็บดอกมะลิอยู่ในสวน องค์สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า พร้อมด้วยพระภิกษุสงฆ์กำลังเสด็จออกบิณฑบาตผ่านมา นายมาลาการเห็นดังนั้นจึงเกิดความเลื่อมใสศรัทธาต่อพระพุทธองค์ จึงนำดอกมะลิ 8 กำมือ ไปถวายแด่พระพุทธองค์



พระเจ้าพิมพิสารราชาทรงทราบข่าวว่า พระศาสดาเสด็จออกบิณฑบาตรมาถึงใกล้ๆพระราชวังจนนายมาลาการได้พบปะและถวายดอกมะลิบูชา พระราชาจึงเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปถวายบังคมต่อพระศาสดา แล้วเสด็จตามพระศาสดาไป ด้วยความเลื่อมใสศรัทธา พระเจ้าพิมพิสารเลยบำเหน็จรางวัลความดีความชอบและพระราชทานสิ่งของทั้งปวงให้กับนายมาลาการนับแต่นั้นมานายมาลาการก็อยู่อย่างร่มเย็นปราศจากทุกข์ใดทั้งปวงด้วยอานิสงส์ของการนำดอกมะลิบูชาแด่องค์สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าแทนการตักบาตรจากอานิสงส์ดังกล่าวแต่ครั้งพุทธกาลชาวพุทธทั่วไปจึงถือเป็นประเพณี "ตักบาตรดอกไม้" เป็นประจำทุกปี ตลอดจนกระทั่งถึงปัจจุบันนี้
