4. ไทยสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2

สงครามโลกเกิดขึ้น 2 ครั้ง และไทยก็เกี่ยวข้องทั้ง 2 ครั้ง คือ ในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 (พ.ศ. 2457 – 2461) ไทยเข้าร่วมกับฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตรในระยะหลังๆ ของสงคราม โดยส่งทหารไปร่วมรบในทวีปยุโรป แต่ยังไม่ทันได้ร่วมรบ สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 ก็สงบลง ในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 (พ.ศ. 2482 – 2488) มีผลต่อไทยโดยตรงและไทยเกี่ยวข้องตั้งแต่ระยะแรกๆ ของสงครามแม้ว่าไทยจะไม่ใช่สมรภูมิที่สำคัญ แต่สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ด้านทวีปเอเชียก็มีผลต่อไทยมาก

ในกรณีของไทย ญี่ปุ่นส่งทหารเข้ามาโจมตีหลายที่ เช่น ที่บางปู (สมุทรปราการ) นครศรีธรรมราช สงขลา ปัตตานี ซึ่งทหาร ตำรวจ และประชาชนได้สู้รบอย่างกล้าหาญ แต่ในวันนั้นเอง จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม นายกรัฐมนตรีได้สั่งให้ยุติการต่อต้านกองทัพญี่ปุ่น โดยยินยอมให้กองทัพญี่ปุ่นยกผ่านไปโจมตีพม่าและมลายู (มาเลเซีย) ได้ 3 วันต่อมาญี่ปุ่นได้เสนอไทยทำสัญญาเป็นพันธมิตร ในวันที่ 21 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2484 พร้อมประกาศสงครามกับสหรัฐอเมริกา อังกฤษ ในวันที่ 25 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2485 อังกฤษกับประเทศเครือจักรภพบางประเทศประกาศสงครามกับไทย แต่สหรัฐอเมริกาไม่ได้ประกาศสงครามตอบ

การที่รัฐบาลไทยประกาศสงครามต่อฝ่ายสหรัฐอเมริกา อังกฤษ ซึ่งเป็นประเทศสำคัญของฝ่ายพันธมิตร ทำให้คนไทยบางส่วนทั้งในเมืองไทยและในต่างประเทศ ไม่เห็นด้วย จึงได้รวมกำลังจัดตั้งเป็นขบวนการเสรีไทย เพื่อต่อต้านญี่ปุ่น

ขบวนการเสรีไทย มีทั้งในประเทศไทยและต่างประเทศ ในประเทศไทย มีหัวหน้า คือ หลวงประดิษฐ- มนูธรรม (ปรีดี พนมยงค์) ในต่างประเทศมีทั้งในสหรัฐอเมริกาหัวหน้า คือ ม.ร.ว.เสนีย์ ปราโมช เอกอัครราชทูตไทยประจำกรุงวอชิงตัน ดี. ซี. ในอังกฤษมี ม.จ. สุภสวัสดิ์สนิท สวัสดิวัฒน์ นายป๋วย อึ้งภากรณ์ เป็นกำลังสำคัญ ผู้ที่รวมในขบวนการเสรีไทยมีทั้งข้าราชการ นักศึกษาในต่างประเทศจำนวนหนึ่ง
