Results
The individual interviews and focus groups generated a great deal of discussion among the nurses. Although the nurses came from diverse work settings (inpatient oncology, community, ambulatory oncology, palliative care unit), many common sentiments were expressed. Coding and analysis of the data generated eight overarching key messages related to nurses’ experiences caring for patients and their families dealing with MBO (Box 1).
Emotional impact on patients and families
Patients and families experiencing intense emotion was frequently referred to by the nurses. A variety of emotions were identified including uncertainty, fear, sense of burden, and guilt. Nurses’ described patients’ ‘uncertainty’ around the unknown and the yet-to-come, and the impact of this on their families.
‘They may be hospitalised and it subsides, but they’ve had one episode, [so patients think:] “Now what’s going to happen when I go home?
Am I going to be able to eat? What if I eat and
I start to throw up?”’
