To date, two preliminary stock assessments have been undertaken
for wahoo. Wahoo in U.S. fisheries in the South Atlantic,
Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico were considered to comprise a single
stock for assessment and management purposes, and median catch
histories were used as a proxy of fishing mortality to preliminary
assess the stock (SAMC, 2003). The assessment suggested a maximum
sustainable yield (MSY) of 640–740 t, however no assessment
of the current status of the stock was provided (SAMC, 2003). In
the waters off Taiwan, MULTIFAN was used to undertake an agestructured
model for which the current fishing mortality (Fcurrent) of
wahoo was compared to reference points. A yield per recruit model
was used to calculate reference points, with target reference points
of F0.1 and FSSB40 estimated to occur at fishing mortalities of 0.57
and 0.71 year−1, respectively, and a limit reference point of FSSB30
at a fishing mortality of 1.39 year−1. Therefore Fcurrent (0.44 year−1)
was deemed sustainable in this fishery (T.M. Lee, pers. comm.).
