มะขามหวานเป็นพืชเอกลักษณ์และพืชเศรษฐกิจของจังหวัดเพชรบูรณ์มาแต่ดั้งเดิมจนได้ชื่อว่า เมืองมะขามหวาน เมื่อเอ่ยถึงเมืองมะขามหวานประชาชนโดยทั่วไปก็เข้าใจเป็นอย่างเดียวกันว่าหมายถึง เมืองเพชรบูรณ์ มะขามหวานของจังหวัดมีหลายพันธุ์ เช่น พันธุ์หมื่นจง พันธุ์สีทอง (พันธุ์นายหยัด) พันธุ์ อินทผาลัม พันธุ์สีชมภู พันธุ์ปากดุก พันธุ์นายเบื้อง พันธุ์หลังแตก พันธุ์น้ำผึ้ง พันธุ์โป่งตูม พันธุ์ผู้ใหญ่มา เป็นต้น





พันธุ์หมื่นจง ปัจจุบันอยู่หมู่ที่ ๕ ตำบลหล่มเก่า (เยื้องวัดสระเกศ) อายุประมาณ ๑๕๐ ปี ปลูกโดย หมื่นจงประชากิจ (ฉิม พุทธสิมมา) ไม่มีหลักฐานว่าหมื่นจงประชากิจได้นำพันธุ์มาจากที่ใด ปัจจุบันโคนต้นโต ประมาณ ๓ คนจับมือกันจึงจะรอบต้น กิ่งก้านถูกตัดทิ้งมากเพราะปกคลุมหลังคาบ้าน และยังได้ผลอย่าง สม่ำเสมอ ลักษณะฝักโค้งเกือบครึ่งวงกลม มีความหวานจัด มีน้ำตาลร้อยละ ๔๒ และมีกรดทาทาริคร้อยละ ๑.๙๐

พันธุ์สีทอง (พันธุ์นายหยัด)เป็นพันธุ์ที่กลายมาจากพันธุ์หมื่นจง กล่าวคือ ประมาณ พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๓ นายหยัด กองมูล ได้นำเมล็ดมะขามหวานพันธุ์หมื่นจงไปปลูกในที่ดินของตนประมาณ ๒๐ เมล็ด หลังจาก นั้นประมาณ ๗ ปี จึงมีผลปรากฎว่าเปรี้ยวที่สุด ๑๗ ต้น เปรี้ยวอมหวาน (มะยงชิด) ๑ ต้น หวานแต่ฝักเล็ก ๑ ต้น หวานจัดฝักใหญ่ที่สุด ๑ ต้น ต้นนี้คือ มะขามหวานต้นตระกูลพันธุ์สีทอง หรือพันธุ์นายหยัด ลักษณะใบ ใหญ่หนา ถ้าสมบูรณ์เต็มที่เกือบเท่าใบแค ยอดอ่อนออกใหม่ออกสีชมภู-แดง ฝักกลม ฝักใหญ่มากโค้งเล็ก น้อย โค้งเป็นครึ่งวงกลมบ้าง ลักษณะเนื้อค่อนข้างเหลืองเนื้อล่อนหนา รสหวานสนิท มีน้ำตาลร้อยละ ๔๒- ๔๔ จำนวนฝักต่อกิโลกรัม ๓๐-๓๕ ฝัก

พันธุ์อินทผาลัม เป็นมะขามพันธุ์เบา ฝักตรงโค้งนิด ๆ รสเปรี้ยวนิด ๆ ต้นเดิมอยู่ที่บ้านหนองเล ตำบล หินฮาว อำเภอหล่มเก่า ฝักจะสุกระหว่างเดือนธันวาคม-มกราคม

วิธีปลูก
