ชื่อเดิมของ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิต

เสด็จพระราชสมภพ เมื่อ วันศุกร์ ที่ ๑๒ สิงหาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๕ ณ บ้านของพลเอกเจ้าพระยาวงศานุประพันธ์ (ม.ร.ว.สท้าน สนิทวงศ์) และท้าววนิดาพิจาริณี บิดาและมารดาของหม่อมหลวงบัว กิติยากร ตั้งอยู่ที่ ๑๘๐๘ ถนนพระรามที่ ๖ อำเภอปะทุมวัน จ.พระนคร ได้รับพระราชทานนามจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวว่า "สิริกิติ์" มีความหมายว่า "ผู้เป็นศรีแห่งกิติยากร" สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงมีพระภาดา (พี่ชาย) ๒ องค์ และพระขนิษฐภคินี (น้องสาว) ๑ องค์ ดังนี้

ในระหว่างยังทรงพระเยาว์ สถานการณ์บ้านเมืองไม่สู้สงบนัก เนื่องจากเพิ่งพ้นจากช่วงการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองไม่นาน เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๖ ขณะที่หม่อมราชวงศ์หญิงสิริกิติ์ มีอายุเพียง ๑ ขวบ ก็ต้องอยู่ไกลจากพระบิดามารดาโดยได้ตามเสด็จพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ไปประทับอยู่ที่จังหวัดสงขลา เมื่อหม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคลทรงลาออกจากราชการและกลับมาจากวอชิงตัน ดี.ซี.ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๗ หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ ซึ่งขณะนั้นอายุได้ ๒ ปี ๖ เดือน จึงได้กลับมาอยู่รวมพร้อมหน้ากันทั้งครอบครัว
สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงปฏิบัติพระราชภารกิจมากมายโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งภารกิจในการส่งเสริมคุณภาพชีวิต อาชีพ และความเป็นอยู่ของบุคคลผู้ยากไร้ และประชาชนในชนบทห่างไกล ได้โดยเสด็จพระราชดำเนิน พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวไปทั่วทุกหนแห่งในแผ่นดินไทยนี้
โครงการที่มีสาขาขยายกว้างขวางไปทั่วประเทศโครงการหนึ่งก็คือ โครงการส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพ ซึ่งในภายหลังทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯให้ก่อตั้ง เป็นรูปมูลนิธิ พระราชทานนามว่า "มูลนิธิส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพพิเศษในพระบรมราชินูปถัมภ์" เมื่อวันที่ ๒๑ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๙ และเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๘ ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อ เป็น มูลนิธิส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ อันเป็นการส่งเสริมอาชีพและขณะเดียวกันยังอนุรักษ์และส่งเสริมงานศิลปะพื้นบ้านที่มีความงดงามหลายสาขา เช่น การปั้น การทอ การจัสาน
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และสมเด็จพระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงสายสะพายนพรัตน์ราช วราภรณ์เมื่อวันที่๒๘ เมษายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๙๓ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดการ พระราชพิธีราชาภิเษกสมรสขึ้น ณ วังสระปทุม และโปรดเกล้าฯ สถาปนาหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ขึ้นเป็น สมเด็จพระราชินีสิริกิติ์

พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๙ เมื่อหม่อมราชวงศ์หญิงสิริกิติ์มีอายุได้ ๔ ขวบ ก็ได้เข้ารับการศึกษาครั้งแรกในชั้นอนุบาลที่โรงเรียนราชินี ทว่าในขณะนั้น แม้เหตุการณ์ด้านการเมืองภายในประเทศไทย จะสงบลง แต่สถานการณ์ระหว่างประเทศก็ไม่สงบ กล่าวคือสงครามมหาเอเชียบูรพาเริ่มแผ่ขยายมาถึงประเทศไทย กรุงเทพมหานครถูกโจมตีทางอากาศหลายครั้งจนการคมนาคม ไม่สะดวก พระบิดาจึงให้หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ย้ายไปเรียนที่โรงเรียนเซนต์ฟรังซีสซาเวียร์คอนแวนต์ เพราะอยู่ใกล้วังพระบิดา ได้เรียนที่นั่นตั้งแต่ชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ ๒ จนจบชั้น มัธยมศึกษา หม่อมราชวงศ์หญิงสิริกิติ์ได้เรียนเปียโน ซึ่งเรียนได้ดี และเร็วเป็นพิเศษ นอกจากนี้ยังได้ศึกษาภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาฝรั่งเศสด้วย
พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๙ ครั้นเมื่อสงครามโลกครั้งที่สองสงบลงหม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคลต้องเสด็จไปดำรงตำแหน่งเอกอัครราชทูตประจำ สำนักเซนต์ เยมส์ ประเทศอังกฤษ ทั้งนี้โดยได้ทรงพาครอบครัว ทั้งหมดไปอยู่ด้วย ในเวลานั้น หม่อมราชวงศ์หญิงสิริกิติ์ มีอายุได้ ๑๓ ปีเศษ และเรียนจบชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ ๓ แล้ว
ในประเทศอังกฤษหม่อมราชวงศ์หญิงสิริกิติ์ได้ศึกษาต่อทั้งวิชาภาษาอังกฤษ ฝรั่งเศส และวิชาเปียโนกับครูพิเศษหลังจากนั้นไม่นานพระบิดาย้ายไปดำรงตำแหน่งเอกอัครราชทูตประจำประเทศเดนมาร์กและประเทศ ฝรั่งเศส ตามลำดับ หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ก็ยังคงเรียนเปียโน และตั้งใจจะศึกษาต่อในวิทยาลัย การดนตรีที่มีชื่อเสียงของกรุงปารีส
