การแข่งขันโพน เป็นประเพณีหนึ่งของภาคใต้ เชื่อว่าเริ่มมีขึ้นพร้อมๆ กับประเพณีชักพระเนื่องจากนิยมปฏิบัติต่อเนื่องกันมา ก่อนที่จะมีการชักพระในวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 11 คือ ในช่วงออกพรรษาประมาร ปลายเดือน 10 วัดต่างๆ จะเตรียมจัดประเพณีชักพระ โดยเริ่มตั้งแต่การทำบุษบก หุ้มโพนะและคุมโพน (ตีโพน) ก่อน เพื่อให้ชาวบ้านตามหมู่บ้านต่างๆ ได้ทราบว่าทางวัดจะจัดให้มีการชักพระตามประเพณีที่เคยปฏิบัติเป็นประจำทุกปี แต่ส่วนมากวัดจะอยู่ในละแวกเดียวกัน ทำให้ชาวบ้านไม่ทราบว่าเสียงโพนที่ตีเป็นของวัดใด ทำให้แต่ละวัดแข่งเสียงโพนกันว่าโพนะวัดใดจะเสียงดังกว่ากัน ในระยะแรกๆ นั้นจะตีแข่งกันเองภายในวัด ต่อมาจึงค่อยๆ นำโพนมาประชันกันตามกลางทุ่นนา หรือสถานที่ที่จัดเตรียมไว้

กล่าวได้ว่า จังหวัดพัทลุงเป็นจังหวัดหนึ่งในภาคใต้ที่ยังรักษาประเพณีแข่งโพนไว้ ดังนั้นศูนย์การศึกษานอกโรงเรียนและศูนย์วัฒนธรรมจังหวัดพัทลุง จึงจัดงานประเพณีแข่งโพนลากพระขึ้น เพื่ออนุรักษ์ประเพณีของท้องถิ่น และเป็นการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัด ทั้งยังก่อให้เกิดความสนุกสนานการประลองความสามารถและความมีไหวพริบของผู้แข่งขัน รวมทั้งเป็นประเพณีที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับศาสนา ก่อให้เกิดความรักในหมู่คณะและในท้องถิ่น โดยเริ่มจัดอย่างเป็นทางการครั้งแรกเมื่อปี 2531 ปีต่อมาการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทยสนใจจึงสนับสนุนให้เป็นที่รู้จักกันทั่วไป
