ยานอวกาศดอว์นได้มีโอกาสทำภารกิจถึงสองครั้งในการออกสำรวจดาวเคราะห์เเคระในระบบสุริยะ โดยยานอวกาศดอว์นได้รับภารกิจเเรกในการสำรวจดาวเคราะห์เเคระเวสตา (Vesta) ซึ่งอยู่ในแถบดาวเคราะห์น้อยระหว่างดาวอังคารและดาวพฤหัสบดี และเข้าสู่วงโคจรของดาวเคราะห์แคระเวสตา ใช้เวลาในการสำรวจอยู่ประมาณ 14 เดือน ทำการบันทึกภาพเเละส่งข้อมูลกลับสู่โลก จนสามารถทราบถึงองค์ประกอบพื้นฐาน อุณหภูมิ ลักษณะโครงสร้างต่างๆ ของดาวเคราะห์แคระเวสตา หลังจากนั้นได้เดินทางออกจากวงโคจรของดาวเคราะห์เเคระเวสตาในวันที่ 4 กันยายน 2555 เพื่อไปสำรวจดาวเคราะห์แคระเซเรส ในที่สุดก็เข้าสู่วงโคจรเดียวกับดาวเคราะห์เเคระเซเรส ในวันที่ 6 พฤษภาคม 2558
