ว่านหางจระเข้เป็นพืชชนืดหนึ่งที่พืชอวบน้ำลำต้นสั้นหรือไม่มีลำต้นสูง 60–100 ซม. (24–39 นิ้ว) กระจายพันธุ์โดยตะเกียง ใบหนาอ้วนมีสีเขียวถึงเทา-เขียว บางสายพันธุ์มีจุดสีขาวบนและล่างของโคนใบ[1] ขอบใบเป็นหยักและมีฟันเล็กๆสีขาว ออกดอกในฤดูร้อนบนช่อเชิงลด สูงได้ถึง 90 ซม. (35 นิ้ว) ดอกเป็นดอกห้อย วงกลีบดอกสีเหลืองรูปหลอด ยาว 2–3 ซม. (0.8–1.2 นิ้ว)[1][2] ว่านหางจระเข้ก็เหมือนพืชชนิดอื่นในสกุลที่สร้างอาร์บัสคูลาร์ไมคอร์ไรซา (arbuscular mycorrhiza) ขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นสมชีพที่ทำให้พืชดูดซึมสารอาหารและแร่ธาตุในดินได้ดีขึ้น
