เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง เป็นปรัชญาที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงมีพระราชดำริในการแก้ไขปัญหาการดำเนินชีวิตอย่างพอเพียงหรือพอมีพอกินในปี พ.ศ. 2537 โดยทรงพระราชทานแนวพระราชดำริทฤษฎีใหม่ให้หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องได้ตระหนักในความสำคัญสำหรับนำไปใช้ในการแก้ไขปัญหา ที่เน้นการพึ่งพาตนเอง โดยยึดหลักปรัชญาของเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง ที่สามารถครอบคลุมภาคเกษตรกรรม อุตสาหกรรม และพาณิชยกรรม ตลอดจนการดำเนินชีวิตของพสกนิกรทุกกลุ่มอาชีพซึ่งพระองค์ได้ทรงทดลองจนเป็นที่ประจักษ์ว่า หลักปรัชญาของเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงเป็นปรัชญาที่มีความเหมาะสมกับการดำเนินชีวิตของคนในสังคมปัจจุบันและอนาคต

จากเอกสารในการประชุม "วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีกับเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง" สำนักงานพัฒนาวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแห่งชาติ (เมษายน 2543) ซึ่งได้ประมวลกลั่นกรองจากพระราชดำรัสของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เรื่อง"เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง" ซึ่งพระราชทานในโอกาสต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งพระราชดำรัสต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้กล่าวถึงเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง ไว้ดังนี้

หลังจากที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้มีพระราชกระแสรับสั่งแนะแนวทางการดำเนินชีวิต โดยใช้หลักเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง นับเนื่องมาจนถึงวันนี้ก็เป็นเวลา 1 ขวบปีพอดี วิกฤตการณ์เศรษฐกิจของประเทศก็ยังคงอยู่ สมควรที่พวกเราได้ทบทวนพระราชกระแสกันอีกสักครั้ง เพื่อให้พวกเราได้ “ใจดี สู้เสือ” กันต่อไป เพื่อนำให้ตัวเราและชาติบ้านเมืองได้ผ่านมรสุมร้ายที่กำลังเผชิญอยู่ในขณะนี้ ด้วยสติที่มั่นคง ปัญญาที่เฉียบแหลม และด้วยความรู้ ความเข้าใจ อย่างลึกซึ้ง เพื่อปรับวิถีชีวิตของพวกเราชาวไทยให้ยึดมั่นแนวทางเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง เพื่อสร้างและยึดมั่นวิถีชีวิตไทย อันนำมาสู่พวกเราชาวไทยทุกหมู่เหล่าต่อไป ชั่วกาลนาน

ความหมาย : เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง
