จังหวัดภูเก็ต เป็นจังหวัดหนึ่งทางภา

คำว่า ภูเก็ต คาดว่าน่าจะเพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า บูกิต(ในภาษามลายูแปลว่าภูเขา) หรือที่เคยรู้จักแต่โบราณในนาม เมืองถลาง
