ประวัติความเป็นมาของพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม

โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 1 มิถุนายน พ.ศ.2542 โดยมีความมุ่งหมายเพื่อสื่อสารถึงอัตลักษณ์ของมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ที่มีจุดเริ่มต้นและพัฒนาการอย่างมีความหมายและความสำคัญควบคู่มากับพัฒนาการ ของสังคม ตั้งแต่ยุคที่เป็นวิทยาลัยวิชาการศึกษามหาสารคาม (พ.ศ.2511) จนถึงมหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒมหาสารคาม (พ.ศ.2517) และเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม (พ.ศ.2537) รวมทั้งเป็นศูนย์กลางแห่งการพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ด้านพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อส่งเสริมให้สังคมได้รับผลประโยชน์จากกิจการพิพิธภัณฑ์ ทั้งในด้านการปลูกจิตสำนึกแห่งคุณค่าและความสำคัญของท้องถิ่น การจัดการพิพิธภัณฑ์ให้เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ที่ตอบสนองต่อความต้องการของสังคม
นอกจากนี้ โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามยังทำหน้าที่สนับสนุนการจัดการเรียนการสอน การวิจัย และบริการวิชาการด้านพิพิธภัณฑ์ตลอดจนเป็นสถานที่สำหรับการพักผ่อนและจัดกิจกรรมสำหรับคณาจารย์ นิสิต และบุคคลทั่วไป

ผศ.ดร.ทวีศิลป์ สืบวัฒนะ ประธานโครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัย มหาสารคามได้มีดำริที่จะจัดตั้งสวนสัตว์ขนาดเล็กบนพื้นที่โดยรอบบริเวณโครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ทั้งนี้ด้วยความร่วมมือกับสวนสัตว์นครราชสีมาองค์กร สวนสัตว์ในพระบรามราชูปถัมภ์กระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ในส่วนของสถานีศึกษาสัตว์จะมีสัตว์อยู่หลายชนิด อาทิเช่น กวางลูซ่า, ละมั่ง, เนื้อทราย, กวางดาว, นกยูง, นกแก้วมาคอร์ และยังมีสัตว์อื่นๆอีกในโครงการ เพื่อใช้เป็นแหล่งพักผ่อนหย่อนใจ สนับสนุนการศึกษาวิจัย และการเรียนการสอนของมหาวิทยาลัย และบุคคลทั่วไปรวมทั้งส่งเสริมให้ชุมชน สามารถสร้างประโยชน์ในเชิงเศรษฐกิจจากการเพาะเลี้ยงและขยายพันธุ์สัตว์บางประเภทด้วย
ดังนั้นด้วยความร่วมมือจากนายสัตวแพทย์วรพล เองวานิช(อาจารย์ภาควิชาเทคโนโลยีผลิตสัตว์ มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม) และอาจารย์อลงกต แทนกองทอง (ภาควิชาชีววิทยา มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น)ได้เป็นธุระประสานงานกับทางสวนสัตว์นครราชสีมา โดยมีนาวาอากาศโทกระวี กรีธาพล เป็นผู้อำนวยการ เพื่อดำเนินการจัดตั้งสวนสัตว์มหาวิทยาลัยขึ้น และได้ทำการเปิดให้บริการในเดือนพฤษภาคม พ.ศ.2548
โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามตั้งในพื้นที่ของมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามตำบลขามเรียง อำเภอกันทรวิชัย จังหวัดมหาสารคาม โดยตั้งอยู่บริเวณด้านทิศตะวันออกของอาคารบรมราชกุมารี (สำนักอธิการบดี)

ที่ตั้งโครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ภายในพื้นที่โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามได้แบ่งพื้นที่ใช้สอยออกเป็น 8 ส่วน ดังนี้
1. เรือนอีสานประยุกต์หลังใหญ่ ประกอบด้วย สำนักงาน ห้องประชุมใหญ่ ห้องประชุมย่อย ห้องรับรอง คลังพิพิธภัณฑ์ หอจดหมายเหตุมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม และนิทรรศการพัฒนาการมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม
2. เรือนอีสานประยุกต์หลังเล็ก ประกอบด้วยนิทรรศการพัฒนาการมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม และพื้นที่สำหรับจัดนิทรรศการหมุนเวียน
3. เรือนโข่ง ปัจจุบันเป็นที่ตั้งชมรมนาฏศิลป์และดนตรีพื้นเมืองมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม
4. เรือเกย ปัจจุบันเป็นที่ตั้งโครงการอนุรักษ์ใบลานในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ
5. เล้าข้าว ตูบต่อเล้า จัดแสดงเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้ในวิถีชีวิตชาวลุ่มแม่น้ำชี

3. เพื่อสนับสนุนการจัดการเรียนการสอนและการวิจัยในสาขาวิชาต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องเช่น ด้านประวัติศาสตร์ มานุษยวิทยา พิพิธภัณฑ์ศึกษา
