เมื่อวันที่ 24 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2549 ที่ประชุมสหพันธ์ดาราศาสตร์สากล ที่กรุงปราก สาธารณรัฐเช็ก ซึ่งประกอบด้วยนักดาราศาสตร์กว่า 2,500 คนจาก 75 ประเทศทั่วโลก ได้มีมติกำหนดนิยามใหม่ของดาวเคราะห์ ดังนี้ [1][2]
1. เป็นดาวที่โคจรรอบดาวฤกษ์ (ซึ่งในที่นี้หมายถึงดวงอาทิตย์) แต่ไม่ใช่ดาวฤกษ์ และไม่ใช่ดาวบริวาร
2. มีมวลมากพอที่จะมีแรงโน้มถ่วงดึงดูดตัวเองให้อยู่ในสภาวะสมดุลอุทกสถิต หรือรูปร่างใกล้เคียงกับทรงกลม
3. มีวงโคจรที่ชัดเจนและสอดคล้องกับดาวเคราะห์ข้างเคียง
