ประวัติวอลเลย์บอล

วอลเลย์บอลได้แพร่หลายเข้ามาใน ไทย ตั้งแต่เมื่อใดไม่มีหลักฐานยืนยันแน่ชัด เพียงแต่ทราบกันว่าในระยะแรกๆ เป็นที่นิยมเล่นกันในหมู่ชาวจีนและชาวญวนมาก จนกระทั่งมีการแข่งขันระหว่างคณะ ชุมชน สโมสร และสมาคมขึ้น บางครั้งติดต่อแข่งขันกันไปในภาคเหนือ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และมีการแข่งขันชิงถ้วยทองคำทางภาคใต้
ปี พ.ศ. 2477 กรมพลศึกษาได้จัดพิมพ์กติกาวอลเลย์บอลขึ้น โดยอาจารย์นพคุณ พงษ์สุวรรณ เป็นผู้แปล และท่านเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญในกีฬาวอลเลย์บอลเป็นอย่างยิ่ง จึงได้รับเชิญเป็นผู้บรรยายเกี่ยวกับเทคนิควิธีการเล่น ตลอดจนกติกาการแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอล แก่บรรดาครูพลศึกษาทั่วประเทศในโอกาสที่กระทรวงศึกษาได้เปิดอบรมขึ้น
ใน ปีนี้เองกรมพลศึกษาได้จัดให้มีการแข่งขันกีฬาประจำปีขึ้น และบรรจุกีฬาวอลเลย์บอลหญิงเข้าไว้ในรายการแข่งขันเป็นครั้งแรก พร้อมทั้งในหลักสูตรของโรงเรียนพลศึกษากลางได้กำหนดวิชาบังคับให้นักเรียน หญิงเรียนวิชาวอลเลย์บอลและเนตบอล สมัยนั้นมี น.อ.หลวงสุภชลาศัย ร.น. ดำรงตำแหน่งอธิบดีกรมพลศึกษา
จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2500 ได้มีการจัดตั้ง "สมาคมวอลเลย์บอลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย" (Amature Volleyball Association of Thailand) โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสนับสนุนและเผยแพร่กีฬาวอลเลย์บอลให้เจริญรุดหน้า และดำเนินการจัดการแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอลในระบบ 6 คน มีหน่วยราชการอื่นๆ จัดการแข่งขันประจำปี เช่น กรมพลศึกษา กรมการคณะกรรมการกีฬามหาวิทยาลัย เทศบาลนครกรุงเทพฯ สภากีฬาทหาร ตลอดจนการแข่งขันกีฬาเขตแห่งประเทศไทย ได้มีการจัดแข่งขันทั้งประเภททีมชายและทีมหญิงประจำปีทุกปี

จุดมุ่งหมายของกีฬาวอลเลย์บอล
1. เพื่อให้มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับประวัติความเป็นมาของกีฬาวอลเลย์บอล
2. เพื่อให้มีความสามารถในการเล่นทักษะเบื้องต้นต่างๆ ของกีฬาวอลเลย์บอลอย่างถูกต้อง
3. เพื่อให้มีควมสามารถในการเล่นทีมได้อย่างถูกต้องและฉลาด
4. เพื่อให้มีความรู้ความเข้าใจในกติกาเกี่ยวกับการเล่นกีฬาวอลเลย์บอล
5. เพื่อส่งเสริมในการพัฒนาร่างกาย จิตใจ สังคม และอารมณ์
6. เพื่อส่งเสริมให้มีนิสัยรู้จักการช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน
7. ส่งเสริมให้เป็นคนมีน้ำใจนักกีฬา
8. เพื่อก่อให้เกิดความสนุกสนาน และเพลิดเพลินในการเล่นกีฬาวอลเลย์บอล
9. เพื่อปลูกฝังนิสัยให้รู้จักกการใช้เวลาว่างให้เป็นประโยชน์โดยการเล่นกีฬาวอลเลย์บอล
