ประวัติความเป็นมาของวันวิสาขบูชาในประเทศไทย
ปรากฏหลักฐานว่า วันวิสาขบูชา เริ่มต้นครั้งแรกในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงสุโขทัยเป็นราชธานี สันนิษฐานว่าได้รับแบบแผนมาจากลังกา นั่นคือ เมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ. 420 พระเจ้าภาติกุราช กษัตริย์แห่งกรุงลังกา ได้ประกอบพิธีวิสาขบูชาขึ้น เพื่อถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา จากนั้นกษัตริย์ลังกา พระองค์อื่นๆ ก็ปฏิบัติประเพณีวิสาขบูชานี้สืบทอดต่อกันมา
วันวิสาขบูชา ถือเป็นวันสำคัญที่สุดทางพระพุทธศาสนา เนื่องจากล้วนมีเหตุการณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการถือกำเนิดของพระพุทธศาสนา คือ เป็นวันที่พระศาสดา คือ พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าประสูติ ตรัสรู้ และปรินิพพาน ดังนั้นพุทธศาสนิกชนทั่วโลกจึงให้ความสำคัญกับวันวิสาขบูชานี้ และในวันที่ 13 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2542 องค์การสหประชาชาติได้ยอมรับญัตติที่ประชุม กำหนดให้วันวิสาขบูชาเป็นวันสำคัญของโลก โดยเรียกว่า Vesak Day ตามคำเรียกของชาวศรีลังกา ผู้ที่ยื่นเรื่องให้สหประชาชาติพิจารณา และได้กำหนดวันวิสาขบูชานี้ถือเป็นวันหยุดวันหนึ่งของสหประชาชาติอีกด้วย ทั้งนี้ก็เพื่อให้ชาวพุทธทั่วโลกได้มีโอกาสบำเพ็ญบุญเนื่องในวันประสูติ ตรัสรู้ และปรินิพพานของพระบรมศาสดา โดยการที่สหประชาชาติได้กำหนดให้วันวิสาขบูชาเป็นวันสำคัญของโลกนั้น ได้ให้เหตุผลไว้ว่า องค์สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าทรงเป็นมหาบุรุษผู้ให้ความเมตตาต่อหมู่มวลมนุษย์ เปิดโอกาสให้ทุกศาสนาสามารถเข้ามาศึกษาพุทธศาสนา เพื่อพิสูจน์หาข้อเท็จจริงได้โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องเปลี่ยนมานับถือศาสนาพุทธ และทรงสั่งสอนทุกคนโดยใช้ปัญญาธิคุณ โดยไม่คิดค่าตอบแทน

วันอาสาฬหบูชา คือวันที่พระพุทธเจ้าได้ทรงประกาศพระพุทธศาสนาเป็นครั้งแรก หลังจากตรัสรู้ได้ 2 เดือน โดยแสดงปฐมเทศนาโปรดพระปัญจวัคคีย์ทั้ง 5 ได้แก่ พระโกณฑัญญะ พระวัปปะ พระภัททิยะ พระมหานามะ และพระอัสสชิ ที่ป่าอิสิปตนมฤคทายวัน เมืองพาราณสี แคว้นมคธ จน พระอัญญาโกณฑัญญะ ได้บรรลุธรรมและขอบวชเป็นพระภิกษุรูปแรกในพระพุทธศาสนา จึงถือว่าวันนี้มีพระรัตนตรัยครบองค์สามบริบูรณ์ครั้งแรกในโลก คือ มีทั้งพระพุทธ พระธรรม และพระสงฆ์ ซึ่งเหตุการณ์นี้เกิดขึ้นก่อนพุทธศักราช 45 ปี
ทั้งนี้พระธรรมที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงแก่ปัญจวัคคีย์ทั้ง 5 เรียกว่า "ธัมมจักกัปปวัตตนสูตร" แปลว่า พระสูตรแห่งการหมุนวงล้อธรรม ซึ่งหลังจากปฐมเทศนา หรือเทศนากัณฑ์แรกที่พระองค์ทรงแสดงจบลง พระอัญญาโกณฑัญญะก็ได้ดวงตาเห็นธรรม สำเร็จเป็นพระโสดาบัน จึงขออุปสมบทเป็นพระภิกษุในพระพุทธศาสนา พระพุทธเจ้าก็ได้ประทานอุปสมบทให้ด้วยวิธีที่เรียกว่า "เอหิภิกขุอุปสัมปทา" พระโกณฑัญญะจึงได้เป็น พระอริยสงฆ์องค์แรกในพระพุทธศาสนา ต่อมา พระวัปปะ พระภัททิยะ พระมหานามะ และพระอัสสชิ ก็ได้ดวงตาเห็นธรรม และได้อุปสมบทตามลำดับ
