เสาชิงช้า เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมที่สร้างขึ้นเพื่อใช้ประกอบพิธีโล้ชิงช้า ในพระราชพิธีตรียัมพวาย ตรีปวายของศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดู โดยทั่วไปหมายถึงเสาชิงช้าที่ตั้งอยู่หน้าวัดสุทัศน์เทพวราราม และลานหน้าศาลาว่าการกรุงเทพมหานคร (ลานคนเมือง) ใกล้กับเทวสถานโบสถ์พราหมณ์ ในพื้นที่แขวงเสาชิงช้าและแขวงวัดราชบพิธ เขตพระนคร กรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งถือเป็นสัญลักษณ์อย่างหนึ่งของกรุงเทพมหานคร แม้พิธีโล้ชิงช้าได้เลิกไปแล้วตั้งแต่สมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 7 ก็ตาม

กรมศิลปากรได้ประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนเสาชิงช้าเป็นโบราณสถานสำคัญของชาติเมื่อวันที่ 22 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2492 นับตั้งแต่สร้างครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2327 จนถึงการบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ครั้งล่าสุดซึ่งเสาชิงช้าคู่เดิมถูกถอดเปลี่ยนเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2549 เสาชิงช้ามีอายุรวมประมาณ 222 ปี









พิธีโล้ชิงช้า
เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพระราชพิธีตรียัมพวาย ตรีปวาย เป็นการต้อนรับพระอิศวรซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในสามเทพเจ้าของศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดู เชื่อกันว่าพระอิศวรจะเสด็จลงสู่โลกในวันขึ้นเจ็ดค่ำเดือนยี่ วันนั้นจะมีการแห่พระเป็นเจ้าไปถวายพระพรพระเจ้าอยู่หัว
เมื่อพระเป็นเจ้าเสด็จลงมาสู่โลกมนุษย์ก็ได้เชิญเทวดาองค์อื่นๆ มาเฝ้าและมาร่วมพิธีด้วย ได้แก่ พระอาทิตย์ พระจันทร์ พระคงคา และพระธรณี พราหมณ์จะแกะรูปสัญลักษณ์ของเทวดาแต่ละองค์เป็นเทวรูปลงในไม้กระดานสามแผ่นเพื่อทำการบูชาในเทวสถาน แล้วจากนั้นจะนำไปปักในหลุมหน้าโรงพิธีนั่งดูโล้ชิงช้า หันหน้ากระดานเข้าหาตำแหน่งที่มีพระยายืนชิงช้านั่ง เรียกว่ากระดานลงหลุม ในวันขึ้น 8 ค่ำ เดือนยี่
พระราชพิธีตรียัมปวายนี้จะกระทำในเทวสถานสำหรับพระนคร 3 เทวสถาน คือ เทวสถานพระอิศวร เทวสถานพระมหาวิฆเนศวร และเทวสถานพระนารายณ์ โลกบาลทั้งสี่ (พระยายืนชิงช้า และนาลิวัน) จึงต้องโล้ชิงช้าถวายและรับน้ำเทพมนตร์ด้วย
แต่เดิมนั้นพระราชพิธีตรียัมปวายจะจัดในเดือนอ้าย (ประมาณเดือนธันวาคม) ครั้นล่วงเข้าสู่สมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์จึงได้เปลี่ยนมาจัดในเดือนยี่ (ประมาณเดือนมกราคม) พิธีนี้ถือเป็นพิธีขึ้นปีใหม่ของพราหมณ์ซึ่งในหนึ่งปีพระอิศวรจะเสด็จมาเยี่ยมโลก 10 วัน พราหมณ์จะประชุมที่เทวสถานพระอิศวร แล้วผูกพรตชำระกายสระเกล้าเตรียมรับเสด็จพระอิศวร
