ตั้งอยู่ที่วัดเจติยภูมิ บ้านขาม หมู่ที่ 1 ตำบลบ้านขาม อำเภอน้ำพอง จังหวัดขอนแก่น เป็นปูชนียสถานของจังหวัดขอนแก่น บ้านขามเคยเป็นเมืองมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ เป็นเวลาประมาณ 2000 ปี ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ 500 ต่อมาเจ้าเมืองสุวรรณภูมิ ชื่อ เพี้ยเมืองแพน (ปัจจุบันคือ จังหวัดร้อยเอ็ด) ได้มาตั้งเมืองขามแก่นที่ บ้านขาม พุทธศตวรรษที่ 5 พระยาหลังเขียว หรือโมริย กษัตริย์เจ้าเมืองโมรีย์ (เมืองโมรีย์อยู่ในอาณาเขตของประเทศกัมพูชา) สร้างพระธาตุขามแก่น ตั้งอยู่ในวัดเจติยภูมิ ตำบลบ้านขาม

ประวัติพระธาตุขามแก่น
นับแต่การเสด็จดับขันธ์ปรินิพพานขององค์สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 6 เมื่อถวายพระเพลิงเสร็จ แล้ว พระบรมสารีริกธาตุได้ถูกนำไปประดิษฐานไว้ในที่ต่าง ๆ คือ พระสารีริกธาตุกระโยงหัว (กะโหลกศีรษะ) ฆะฏิการพรหมนำไปไว้บนเทวโลก, พระธาตุเขี้ยวหมากแง (พระเขี้ยวแก้ว) พระอินทร์นำไปไว้บนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงษ์,พระธาตุกระดูกด้ามมีด (พระรากขวัญ ) พระยานาคนำไปไว้เมืองบาดาล
ครั้งต่อมาโมริยกษัตริย์เจ้านครโมรีย์ (อยู่ในประเทศกัมพูชาปัจจุบัน) ทราบข่าวภายหลังเพราะอยู่ห่างไกลและเดินทางช้า จึงได้แต่พระอังคารธาตุ (ฝุ่น) แล้วนำไปไว้ที่นครของตน ประมาณพุทธศักราชล่วงมาได้ 3 ปี พระมหากัสสปะเถระเจ้า พร้อมด้วยพระอรหันต์ 500 องค์ นำเอาพระอุรังคธาตุ (กระดูกส่วนอก) ไปประดิษฐานไว้ภูกำพร้า (พระธาตุพนมในปัจจุบัน) พระยาหลังเขียว โมริยกษัตริย์ และพระอรหันต์ยอดแก้ว,พระอรหันต์รังษี, พระอรหันต์คันที และไม่ปรากฏชื่ออีก 6 องค์ จึงเดินทางพร้อมอัญเชิญเอาพระอังคารธาตุเพื่อไปบรรจุไว้ในพระธาตุพนมด้วย ระหว่างทางได้มาถึงพื้นที่แห่งหนึ่ง (ที่ตั้งของพระธาตุขามแก่นในปัจจุบัน) มีพื้นที่พื้นที่ดอน ราบเรียบ มีห้วยสามแยก น้ำไหลผ่านรอบดอน และมีต้นมะขามใหญ่ที่ตายแล้วเหลือแต่แก่นอยู่ต้นหนึ่ง
ขณะนั้นเป็นเวลาพลบค่ำพอดี ประกอบกับพื้นที่มีความเหมาะสมจึงได้พักแรมที่นี่ และนำเอาพระอังคารธาตุไปวางพักไว้บนแก่นของต้นมะขามที่ตายแล้วดังกล่าว พอรุ่งเช้าทั้งคณะก็เดินทางมุ่งหน้าสู่สถานที่ก่อสร้างพระธาตุพนมต่อไป
พอไปถึงปรากฏว่าพระธาตุพนมได้สร้างเสร็จแล้ว ไม่สามารถนำพระอังคารธาตุบรรจุลงไปได้อีก จึงจำต้องนำเอาพระอังคารธาตุนั้นกลับตามเส้นทางเดิม โดยตั้งใจว่าจะนำกลับไปไว้ที่นครของตนตามเดิม เมื่อมาถึงดอนมะขามซึ่งเคยเป็นที่พักแรม ครั้งก่อน ได้เห็นต้นมะขามใหญ่ที่ล้มตายเหลือแต่แก่นนั้นกลับผลิตดอก ออกผล แตกกิ่งก้านสาขามีใบเขียวชะอุ่มแลดูงามตายิ่งนัก จะเป็นด้วยเทพเจ้าแสร้งนิมิต หรือด้วยอำนาจอภินิหารของพระอังคารธาตุก็มิอาจรู้ได้ เห็นเป็นอัศจรรย์เช่นนั้นจึง พร้อมกันก่อสร้างพระธาตุครอบต้นมะขาม และบรรจุพระอังคารธาตุของพระเจ้าไว้ภายในด้วย โดยมีรูปลักษณะดังที่เราเห็น อยู่ในปัจจุบันนี้ จึง เรียกชื่อพระธาตุนี้ว่า "พระธาตุขามแก่น"
หลังจาการก่อสร้างพระธาตุเสร็จแล้ว พระยาหลังเขียวพร้อมด้วยบริวารได้สร้างบ้านแปลงเมืองอยู่ตรงนี้ และได้สร้างวัดให้เป็นที่พำนักของพระอรหันต์ทั้ง 9 องค์ ซึ่งมีวิหาร และพัทธสีมาเคียงคู่กับองค์พระธาตุสืบมา ครั้นกาลล้วงมาพระอรหันต์ทั้ง 9 องค์ก็ได้ดับขันธ์ปรินิพพาน ชาวเมืองนำเอาอัฐิธาตุของท่านบรรจุไว้ในพระธาตุองค์เล็ก ซึ่งอยู่ด้านทิศตะวันออกของ อุโบสถในเวลานี้ ต่อมาประชาชนจึงเรียกพระธาตุองค์ใหญ่ว่า ครูบาทั้งเก้าเจ้ามหาธาตุ ส่วนพระธาตุองค์เล็กเรียกว่า ครูบาทั้งแปด
