บทคัดย่อ
สมุนไพร หมายถึง "ผลิตผลธรรมชาติ ได้จาก พืช สัตว์ และ แร่ธาตุ ที่ใช้เป็นยา หรือผสมกับสารอื่นตามตำรับยา เพื่อบำบัดโรค บำรุง ร่างกาย หรือใช้เป็นยาพิษ"[1] หากนำเอาสมุนไพรตั้งแต่สองชนิดขึ้นไปมาผสมรวมกันซึ่งจะเรียกว่า ยา ในตำรับยา นอกจากพืชสมุนไพรแล้วยังอาจประกอบด้วยสัตว์และแร่ธาตุอีกด้วย เราเรียกพืช สัตว์ หรือแร่ธาตุที่เป็นส่วนประกอบของยานี้ว่า เภสัชวัตถุ พืชสมุนไพรบางชนิด เช่น เร่ว กระวานกานพลู และจันทน์เทศ เป็นต้น พืชเหล่านี้ถ้านำมาปรุงอาหารเราจะเรียกว่า เครื่องเทศ
ความหมายของสมุนไพร
คำว่า สมุนไพร ตามพจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. 2525 หมายถึง พืชที่ใช้ ทำเป็นเครื่องยา สมุนไพรกำเนิดมาจากธรรมชาติและมีความหมายต่อชีวิตมนุษย์โดยเฉพาะ ในทางสุขภาพ อันหมายถึงทั้งการส่งเสริมสุขภาพและการรักษาโรค ความหมายของยาสมุนไพรในพระราชบัญญัติยา พ.ศ. 2510 ได้ระบุว่า ยาสมุนไพร หมายความว่า ยาที่ได้จากพฤกษาชาติสัตว์หรือแร่ธาตุ ซึ่งมิได้ผสมปรุงหรือแปรสภาพ เช่น พืชก็ยังเป็นส่วนของราก ลำต้น ใบ ดอก ผลฯลฯ ซึ่งมิได้ผ่านขั้นตอนการแปรรูปใด ๆ แต่ในทางการค้า สมุนไพรมักจะถูกดัดแปลงในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ เช่น ถูกหั่นให้เป็นชิ้นเล็กลง บดเป็นผงละเอียด หรืออัดเป็นแท่งแต่ในความรู้สึกของคนทั่วไปเมื่อกล่าวถึงสมุนไพร มักนึกถึงเฉพาะต้นไม้ที่นำมาใช้เป็นยาเท่านั้น
