ศาสตราจารย์ ดร. อมรรัตน์ พงศ์ดารา รองอธิการบดีฝ่ายวิเทศสัมพันธ์ มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ เปิดเผยว่า ในการประชุมคณะกรรมการเครือข่ายมหาวิทยาลัยอาเซียน ( Asean University Network ) หรือ AUN ที่ประเทศเมียนมาร์ เมื่อต้นเดือนกรกฎาคม 2556 ที่ผ่านมา ที่ประชุมได้มีมติให้รับมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ เข้าเป็นสมาชิกใหม่ของเครือข่ายมหาวิทยาลัยอาเซียน อย่างเป็นทางการ โดยก่อนหน้านี้มีสมาชิกซึ่งเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยจากประเทศไทย 4 สถาบัน จากทั้งหมด 27 สถาบัน คือ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย มหาวิทยาลัยบูรพา มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล และมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่

เครือข่ายมหาวิทยาลัยอาเซียน หรือ AUN เป็นความร่วมมือของสถาบันอุดมศึกษาระหว่างประเทศสมาชิกสมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ หรืออาเซียน ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อเดือนพฤศจิกายน 2538 เพื่อส่งเสริมการสร้างความตระหนักในความเป็นอาเซียน การเข้าถึงคุณภาพการศึกษา การเพิ่มคุณภาพการศึกษา มาตรฐานการปฏิบัติงาน การเรียนร้ตลอดชีวิตและการพัฒนาวิชาชีพชั้นสูง การสร้างความเข้มแข็งให้กับการเคลื่อนย้ายพรมแดน และความเป็นสากลของการศึกษา

ในปีที่ผ่านมา เครือข่ายมหาวิทยาลัยอาเซียน ประกอบไปด้วยสมาชิก 27 มหาวิทยาลัย จาก 10 ประเทศ คือ มหาวิทยาลัยภูมินทร์พนมเปญ มหาวิทยาลัยนิติศาสตร์และเศรษฐศาสตร์ กัมพูชา มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งบรูไนดารุสซาลาม จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ มหาวิทยาลัยบูรพา มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล มหาวิทยาลัยย่างกุ้ง สถาบันเศรษฐศาสตร์ย่างกุ้ง สถาบันเทคโนโลยีย่างกุ้ง มหาวิทยาลัยอเทนีโอเดอมะนิลา มหาวิทยาลัยเดอลาซาลเล ฟิลิปปินส์ มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งฟิลิปปินส์ มหาวิทยาลัยปุตรา มาเลเซีย มหาวิทยาลัยมาลายา มหาวิทยาลัย ซายส์ มาเลเซีย มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งชาติมาเลเซีย

อุดมศึกษาไทยมีความสัมพันธ์กับเครือข่ายมหาวิทยาลัยอาเซียนในหลายด้าน ได้แก่ การดําเนินการในการเข้าถึงข้อมูลด้านการศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษาในอาเซียน การสร้างความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับอาเซียนให้ถึงแก่น การสร้างความตระหนักในบทบาทหน้าที่และความร่วมมือในความเป็นอาเซียน การกําหนดบทบาทหน้าที่และกิจกรรมในด้านการศึกษา วิจัย บริหาร วิชาการ การแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรม และการดําเนินการตามแผนและกิจกรรมความร่วมมือของสมาชิกและสมาชิกเครือข่ายสมทบ นอกจากนี้เครือข่ายมหาวิทยาลัยอาเซียนยังร่วมมือกับประเทศจีนและประเทศอื่นๆในเอเชียเพื่อมอบทุนการศึกษาระดับปริญญาโทและปริญญาเอกแก่นักศึกษาในประเทศอาเซียนเพื่อไปเรียนในประเทศอื่นๆ เช่น ประเทศจีน ประเทศญี่ปุ่น และประเทศเกาหลี ในชื่อทุน "AUN Scholarship" อีกด้วย
