ประวัติ/ความเป็นมา

วัดกัลยาณมิตรวรมหาวิหาร เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นโท เจ้าพระยานิกรบดินทร์ (โต กัลยาณมิตร) ได้อุทิศที่ดิน ซึ่งบริเวณดังกล่าวเดิมเรียกว่า "หมู่บ้านกุฎีจีน" วัดนี้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ.2368 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 และได้ถวายเป็นพระอารามหลวง ได้รับพระราชทานนามว่า "วัดกัลยาณมิตร" พร้อมกับทรงสร้างพระวิหารหลวงเพื่อเป็นที่ประดิษฐาน "พระพุทธไตรรัตนนายก" (หลวงพ่อโต) ซึ่งเป็นชื่อที่ได้รับพระราชทานจากรัชกาลที่ 4 หรือเรียกตามแบบจีนว่า ชำปอฮุดกง หรือ ชำปอกง

วัดกัลยาณมิตรวรมหาวิหาร เป็นวัดเดียวในประเทศไทยที่มีองค์พระประธานเป็นพระพุทธรูปปางปาลิไลยก์ โดยประดิษฐานอยู่ในพระอุโบสถ ภายในมีภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังเรื่องพุทธประวัติ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีหอพระธรรมมณเฑียรเถลิงพระเกียรติ เป็นที่เก็บพระไตรปิฎกและพระคัมภีร์ต่าง ๆ ซึ่งรัชกาลที่ 4 โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2408
