เรื่องที่ ๑ กล่าวว่า ในสมัยเจ้าสุมนเทวราช ปีพุทธศักราช ๒๓๕๓-๒๓๖๘ มีพรานเมืองน่าน และพรานเมืองเชียงตุงได้มาพบซากช้างสีดำสนิทที่เขตแดนระหว่างไทยและเชียงตุง จึงได้แบ่งงาช้าง ดำคนละกิ่งกลับไปถวายเจ้าเมือง ต่อมาเจ้าเมืองเชียงตุงได้ส่งสาสน์มาทูลพระเจ้าสุมนเทวราชว่า ตราบใดที่งาช้างคู่นี้ไม่สูญหาย เมืองน่านกับเมืองเชียงตุงจะเป็นมิตรไมตรีกันตลอดไป
เรื่องที่ ๒ กล่าวว่า ครั้งหนึ่งเมืองน่านยกทัพไปล้อมเมืองเชียงตุงทำให้ชาวเชียงตุงเดือดร้อน โหรเมืองเชียงตุงได้ทูลเจ้าเมืองว่าเป็นเพราะมีงาช้างดำอยู่คู่กัน จึงได้มอบงาช้างกิ่งหนึ่งให้กองทัพเมืองน่านแล้วกระทำสัตย์สาบานเป็นมิตรกันตลอดกาล
เชื่อกันว่า พญาการเมือง เจ้าเมืองน่านได้ทำพิธีสาปแช่งไว้ว่าให้งาช้างดำนี้เป็นของคู่บ้านเมือง น่านตลอดไป ห้ามผู้ใดนำไปเป็นสมบัติส่วนตัว และต้องเก็บรักษาไว้ที่หอคำหรือวังของเจ้าผู้ครองนคร เท่านั้น
เมื่อเจ้ามหาพรหมสุรธาดาถึงแก่พิราลัยเมื่อปีพุทธศักราช ๒๔๗๔ เจ้านายผู้เป็นบุตรหลานจึง มอบให้เป็นสมบัติของแผ่นดิน และยังคงเก็บรักษาไว้ที่หอคำ จนกระทั่งป้จจุบัน
