ด้วยสายพระเนตรอันยาวไกลพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเป็นผู้นำทางด้านการพัฒนาพลังงานทดแทนผ่านโครงการส่วนพระองค์มาตั้งแต่ปี 2522 โดยมีโครงการผลิตแก๊สชีวภาพ เอทานอล แก๊สโซฮอล์ และไบโอดีเซลจากปาล์ม ซึ่งในส่วนของพระราชดำริด้านการพัฒนาน้ำมันปาล์มเพื่อใช้กับเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลนั้น การพัฒนาไบโอดีเซลจากน้ำมันปาล์มในชื่อ “การใช้น้ำมันปาล์มกลั่นบริสุทธิ์เป็นเชื้อเพลิงสำหรับเครื่องยนต์ดีเซล” ได้จดสิทธิบัตรที่กระทรวงพาณิชย์เมื่อวันที่ 9 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2544

อีกทั้งในปี 2546 ทรงได้รับการทูลเกล้าฯ ถวายรางวัลจาก “โครงการน้ำมันไบโอดีเซลสูตรสกัดจากน้ำมันปาล์ม” ในงาน “บรัสเซลส์ ยูเรกา” ซึ่งเป็นงานแสดงสิ่งประดิษฐ์ใหม่ของโลกวิทยาศาสตร์ ณ กรุงบรัสเซลส์ ประเทศเบลเยียม ทั้งนี้ปาล์มเป็นพืชที่ให้ปริมาณน้ำมันต่อพื้นที่ปลูกสูง อีกทั้งเกษตรกรสามารถผลิตใช้เองได้ภายในประเทศ ซึ่งจะใช้ทดแทนการนำเข้าเชื้อเพลิงจากต่างประเทศได้
